Dispersive and kinetic effects on kinked Alfven wave packets: A comparative study with fluid and hybrid models

Anna Tenerani et al.

Summary: We examine the effects of dispersion and kinetics on the evolution of a two-dimensional kinked Alfve?n wave packet by comparing three different simulations. The Hall term is found to determine the overall evolution of the wave packet in both fluid and hybrid models. The dispersion of the wave packet leads to the conversion of wave energy into internal plasma energy. The implications of these findings for switchbacks observations and solar wind energetics are discussed.

High-frequency heating of the solar wind triggered by low-frequency turbulence

Jonathan Squire et al.

Summary: Researchers propose the "helicity barrier" effect which can explain the non-thermal heating of ions in the fast solar wind by limiting electron heating. Through simulations and observational data, they suggest that the helicity barrier mechanism may play a key role in the heating process of the solar wind and explain some observational puzzles.

Modeling the Solar Wind Turbulent Cascade Including Cross Helicity: With and Without Expansion

Roland Grappin et al.

Summary: This study assesses two different approaches to understanding the turbulent cascade in the solar wind, including wind expansion. The results show that in the expanding case, the relative cross helicity decreases and the spectral index converges to an asymptotic value, while in the homogeneous simulations, the relative cross helicity increases and pinning occurs.

Direct kinetic Alfven wave energy cascade in the presence of imbalance

T. Passot et al.

Summary: A two-field Hamiltonian gyrofluid model is used to study direct turbulent cascades from the magnetohydrodynamic to the sub-ion scales, retaining ion finite Larmor radius corrections and parallel magnetic field fluctuations. The study finds that for moderate energy imbalance and weak magnetic fluctuations, the spectrum of the transverse magnetic field and the most energetic wave display a steep transition zone near the ion scale, while parallel transfer and dissipation remain weak. The perpendicular flux of generalized cross-helicity shows significant decay past the ion scale, while the perpendicular energy flux remains almost constant. A phenomenological model suggests that the interaction between co-propagative waves at the sub-ion scales plays a key role in the development of a transition zone in the presence of a helicity barrier.

MHD turbulence: a biased review

Alexander A. Schekochihin

Summary: This translated review discusses scaling theories of magnetohydrodynamic turbulence, focusing on recent developments and proposing new perspectives on alignment theory and intermittency effects. The review highlights the relationship between alignment theory and intermittency, and examines the intertwined nature of MHD turbulence theory with reconnection physics. It also presents the idea of a reasonably complete picture of MHD turbulent cascade, from large scales to the dissipation scale, and suggests a shift towards kinetic territory in research.

Parker Solar Probe Enters the Magnetically Dominated Solar Corona

J. C. Kasper et al.

Summary: The high temperatures and strong magnetic fields of the solar corona form streams of solar wind that expand through the Solar System, with magnetic pressure dominating both ion and electron pressure. The sub-Alfvenic nature of the flow suggests suppressed magnetic reconnection at the base of the pseudostreamer, as evidenced by unusually low densities in the region.

Summary: The study shows that at intermediate plasma beta, the dynamics of 2D Hall-MHD turbulence at sub-ion scales is mainly driven by localized intermittent structures, with no significant contribution of wavelike fluctuations.

An approximate analytic solution to the coupled problems of coronal heating and solar-wind acceleration

Benjamin D. G. Chandran

Summary: This paper demonstrates that quasi-isothermal evolution in the solar wind, powered by reflection-driven Alfven-wave turbulence, is a common feature from the base of the solar corona to the Alfven critical point. The mass outflow rate, wind speed, and coronal temperature can be calculated with minimal conductive losses.

On the violation of the zeroth law of turbulence in space plasmas

R. Meyrand et al.

Summary: The zeroth law of turbulence states that the statistical steady state of a turbulent system is independent of microphysical dissipation properties given fixed energy input into large-scale motions. In strongly magnetised plasma turbulence, this law is routinely violated, potentially offering an explanation for the long-standing mystery of spectral breaks in plasma turbulence.
