Data-driven modelling of turbine wake interactions and flow resistance in large wind farms

Andrew Kirby et al.

Summary: Turbine wake and local blockage effects have significant impacts on wind farm power production. To better predict these effects, we develop data-driven emulators that can accurately predict the turbine thrust coefficient as a function of turbine layout. Our model, trained with a combination of low and high-fidelity simulations, outperforms standard regression models and can be used to predict wind farm performance under different atmospheric conditions. This new approach has the potential to improve annual energy production calculations and optimize wind farm performance.

Wind Tunnel Probe Into an Array of Small-Scale Horizontal-Axis Wind Turbines Operating at Low Tip Speed Ratio Conditions

Ojing Siram et al.

Summary: Recently, small wind farms consisting of small-scale horizontal-axis wind turbines (SHAWTs) have become suitable choices for generating electric power. An experimental study was conducted in a wind tunnel to investigate the performance of arrays of two SHAWTs, as well as the assessment of downstream wake. The study found that when installed at a distance from the upstream turbine, the downstream turbine's power coefficient decreased and the wake affected the operational limit.

Summary: Recently, there has been growing interest in the application of small-scale horizontal axis wind turbines (SHAWTs) in areas with low energy demand. This study focuses on the design, development, and testing of a series of SHAWT models. Through aerodynamic analysis, it was found that the M1 rotor performs better than the other rotors and meets the expected performance.

Investigation of the floating IEA Wind 15 MW RWT using vortex methods Part I: Flow regimes and wake recovery

Nestor Ramos-Garcia et al.

Summary: Comparing a BEM-based code with a vortex solver for floating wind turbines, significant discrepancies were found in simulating complex conditions, especially for floating rotor motions. Floating turbines showed faster wake recovery compared to bottom-fixed turbines. The study also explored the impact of mean tilt angle on wake development and conducted a parametric study on floater motion effects.

A Comprehensive Review on Analytical Formulations of Wind Turbine Wake Models and Future Scope in the Development of Wind Farms of Assorted Configurations

Ojing Siram et al.

Summary: In recent years, the design and development of large and small wind farms have become increasingly important to meet the growing energy demand. Several wind turbine wake models have been proposed and widely used to estimate the performance of wind farms. However, these models often overestimate the flow characteristics due to limitations and assumptions. Therefore, there is a need to develop more accurate correlations to predict the performance of wind farms.

The far wake of porous disks and a model wind turbine: Similarities and differences assessed by hot-wire anemometry

Magnus K. Vinnes et al.

Summary: The wakes of two different porous disks, commonly used as wind turbine analogs, were compared experimentally. The results showed that the wakes of the nonuniform disk had faster spreading and lower velocity deficits compared to the uniform disk and wind turbine wakes, mainly due to higher turbulence intensity and transverse transport. In addition, coherent vortex shedding was only observed in the wake of the nonuniform disk, and neither disk could replicate the asymmetric features of the wind turbine wake.

Large-eddy simulation of wind-turbine wakes over two-dimensional hills

Ziyu Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates wind-turbine wakes over 2D hills with different slope gradients using large-eddy simulation and immersed boundary method. The analysis of the flow characteristics, power performance, and flow mechanisms reveals that the Gaussian model is not suitable for representing the velocity deficit in turbine wakes behind steep hills until a further distance. Additionally, the assumption about the wake-center trajectory maintaining a constant elevation downwind of the hilltop is found to be inapplicable for steep hill cases. The optimal location for turbine placement is determined to be the hilltop due to the wind speed-up effect and lower turbulence levels, resulting in more wind energy harvesting and less fatigue loading. Furthermore, the turbulence levels and vertical turbulent flux are found to decrease compared to the no-turbine cases on the windward side and within the hill wake region. The analysis of mean kinetic energy budgets reveals that pressure transport and mean convection play a significant role in balancing the mean kinetic energy in turbine wakes over hilly terrain.

Investigation of the floating IEA wind 15-MW RWT using vortex methods Part II: Wake impact on downstream turbines under turbulent inflow

Nestor Ramos-Garcia et al.

Summary: The manuscript presents a novel numerical investigation on the impact of the wake of a floating IEA wind 15-MW reference wind turbine on downstream machines. The study shows that the motion of the floater increases the power production of downstream machines and their mean thrust level. However, this effect is reduced with the increase of turbulence intensity. The motion of the floater also leads to higher blade loading and increased aerodynamic power in downstream turbines. Furthermore, the study highlights that the interaction between multiple floating machines is more dynamic than between bottom-fixed turbines.

Performance and flow characteristics of the optimum rotors of Betz, Joukowsky, and Glauert at low tip-speed ratio

M. Bourhis et al.

Summary: The advent of the Internet of Things technology has led to a renewed interest in the use of low tip-speed ratio micro-scale wind turbines. This experimental study compares the airflow and power characteristics of three 200-cm wind turbines designed according to different optimum flow conditions at λ=1. The Glauert model achieves the highest maximum power coefficient, while the Betz and Joukowsky models have lower cut-in wind speed and their torque coefficient decreases linearly with the tip-speed ratio.

Influence of atmospheric stability on wind-turbine wakes with a certain hub-height turbulence intensity

Bowen Du et al.

Summary: Atmospheric stability significantly influences the spreading of wind-turbine wakes. Under convective conditions, atmospheric stability enhances spanwise turbulence intensity, leading to faster recovery of turbine wakes; while under stable conditions, reduced wake meandering results in slower turbulence transport, causing a slower recovery of wind-turbine wakes.
