An experimental and analytical study of wind turbine wakes under pressure gradient

Arslan Salim Dar et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates wind turbine wakes subjected to pressure gradients. Wind tunnel experiments are conducted with a wind turbine positioned on straight ramps with varying angles, resulting in a linear flow speed-up/slow-down from the induction region to the far wake. The relationship between pressure gradient and near wake length is found to be quasi-linear. The recovery of wake center velocity deficit and wake growth rate in the far wake vary systematically with the pressure gradient. The power coefficient of the turbine decreases significantly under adverse pressure gradients, while the increase is less pronounced under favorable pressure gradients. A physics-based model for wakes under pressure gradients is proposed and shows significant improvement over the engineering approach.

Effects of the steepness on the evolution of turbine wakes above continuous hilly terrain

Haoze Yang et al.

Summary: Hilly terrain has a significant impact on the flow characteristics of wind turbine wakes. The steepness of hills affects the deflection and recovery rate of turbine wakes, with the pressure term playing a crucial role in these effects.

Large eddy simulations of wind turbine wakes in typical complex topographies

Summary: There is a need to clarify the coupling characteristics of terrain-induced wind fields and wind turbine-induced wake in wind farm micrositing, but research on the effect of hill shape is lacking. Optimal layout of turbines over topographies requires fast prediction of flow behind the turbines. Two superposition methods for predicting turbine wake flow over topographies are compared, with results showing better performance using the B-line method.

Effects of atmospheric stability on the performance of a wind turbine located behind a three-dimensional hill

Luoqin Liu et al.

Summary: The impact of thermal stratification on wind turbine wakes in complex terrain was studied using large eddy simulations. Results showed that a hill wake significantly reduced power production of a downstream turbine in a convective boundary layer, but surprisingly increased power production in a stable boundary layer. This increase was attributed to enhanced mixing induced by the hill wake, leading to entrainment of kinetic energy from a low-level jet.

Investigation of the wake propagation behind wind turbines over hilly terrain with different slope gradients

Wei Tian et al.

Summary: This study conducted a numerical simulation to analyze the wind turbine wake characteristics over two-dimensional Gaussian hills with different slope gradients. It found that hill shape significantly influences wake characteristics, proposed a new method for calculating wake velocity, and discovered that wake recovery is faster for steep slope hills compared to gentle slope hills.

Local topography-induced pressure gradient effects on the wake and power output of a model wind turbine

Tengfei Cai et al.

Summary: Wind-tunnel experiments were conducted to investigate the impact of favorable and adverse constant pressure gradients on the flow field downstream of a model wind turbine. Results showed that the pressure gradients induced wake deflection and modulation, significantly affecting the overall flow recovery.
