Experimental and numerical study of flow field structure in U-shaped channels with different bend sections

Ruquan You et al.

Summary: Time-resolved particle image velocimetry is used to study the flow characteristics of rotating U-shaped channels with different types of bend sections. The results showed that a bend with both inner and outer square walls produces larger corner vortices, separation vortex, and reattachment vortex compared to the other geometrical configurations. Channels with a circular inner wall of the bend delay separation, resulting in smaller separation vortex and reattachment vortex. When both walls of the bend are square, the peak Reynolds shear stress is twice as high as when they are both circular. With the increase in the rotation number, the size of vortical structures changes and the Coriolis force affects the relative size of the secondary flow in the bend section.

Experimental and numerical investigations on the effect of a novel internal surface micro-grooving toward improving convective heat transfer performance of tube heat exchangers

M. M. A. A. Eid et al.

Summary: Passive heat transfer enhancement technique was explored in this study through surface alteration. Internal conduit surface micro-grooving was achieved using a modified magnetic abrasive finishing technique. A new surface profile was created and its effectiveness compared to other profiles in terms of heat transfer and hydrodynamic performance. The results showed that the new profile exhibited higher heat transfer improvement and comparable pressure loss compared to other profiles. The groove geometry significantly influenced the heat transfer enhancement, with smoother profiles performing better than those with sharp edges.

Vortex dynamics of supercritical carbon dioxide flow past a heated circular cylinder at low Reynolds numbers

Jingzhe Xie et al.

Summary: This paper systematically investigates the vortex dynamics of supercritical carbon dioxide in both steady and laminar vortex shedding regimes. By comparing with conventional air, it is found that SCO2 exhibits accelerated vortex shedding processes and a higher Strouhal frequency. The transition from steady separated flow to primary wake instability for SCO2 is identified between Re of 28 and 29, indicating a lower critical Reynolds number than the classical value.

Characteristics of scramjet regenerative cooling with endothermic chemical reactions

Wenli Yu et al.

Summary: This study experimentally and numerically investigated the turbulent heat transfer characteristics of fuels with endothermic chemical reactions. The findings show that endothermic chemical reactions improve the convective heat transfer performance and propose a dimensionless parameter to describe the proportion of chemical endotherm capacity. A new correlation for the Nusselt number is put forward for endothermic reacting flow by modifying the existing correlation.

Computational study on the flame and extinction behavior of a high enthalpy air slab

Andrew Gonzalez et al.

Summary: A study was conducted to analyze the effects of high enthalpy air exposure on the kinetics and flame sustainment properties. The results showed a significant drop in conductive heat flux between inlet temperatures of 300K and 500K, while convective heat flux increased as turbulence was approached at temperatures between 600K and 1000K. The analysis of involved reactions revealed the activation of an endothermic chain branching reaction at higher temperatures, contributing to improved flame holding.

Multi-dimensional modelling and analysis of heat transfer of pyrolytic hydrocarbon fuel at supercritical pressures

Shuai Xu et al.

Summary: This paper presents an efficient multi-dimensional numerical model for investigating the steady heat transfer of supercritical hydrocarbon fuel in mini-channels. The numerical results reveal an unbalanced heat flux distribution and significant differences in heat transfer coefficients among interior walls. The study proposes two methods to mitigate heat concentration and provides useful information for the engineering design of active regenerative cooling systems.

Numerical investigation on the effect of diamond-shaped turbulator on thermo-hydraulic performance of tube

Hassan Hajabdollahi et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the thermo-hydraulic analysis of a diamond-shaped turbulator in a tube using numerical simulation, presenting closed form correlations for Nusselt number and friction factor with respect to Reynolds number. The study reveals the optimal parameters for the turbulator design and demonstrates significant improvement in efficiency and reduction in friction factor by adjusting the parameters.
