External force attached binding focus of particles and its application

Du-Chang Xu et al.

Summary: The particle focus in channel flow refers to the equilibrium position reached by an initialized particle. The binding focus is a phenomenon where two adjacent particles can form a new equilibrium position. This study explores the external force attached binding focus and presents a three-dimensional model using the immersed boundary-lattice Boltzmann method. The migration conditions of the soft particle and its application in single-cell separation are discussed and validated numerically.

Size- and position-dependent cytoplasm viscoelasticity through hydrodynamic interactions with the cell surface

Javad Najafi et al.

Summary: Many studies have focused on small components in the submicrometer scale in cytoplasm rheology. However, this study demonstrates that larger components in the cytoplasm, such as nuclei or microtubule asters, behave differently. The cytoplasm behaves as a viscoelastic material at short timescales and fluidizes at longer times. The resistance of the cytoplasm increases in a nonmonotonic manner as the size of the component approaches that of the cell. This size-dependent viscoelasticity is attributed to hydrodynamic interactions between the moving object and the static cell surface.

A numerical study of fish adaption behaviors in complex environments with a deep reinforcement learning and immersed boundary-lattice Boltzmann method

Yi Zhu et al.

Summary: This study presents a numerical framework utilizing deep learning and IB-LBM to study fish adaptation behaviors in complex environments. The fish behavior is validated through benchmark problems and trained to adapt its motion for specific tasks. The framework efficiently couples with learning algorithms and demonstrates strategies for adaptation in different situations.

Transition to chaos in a two-sided collapsible channel flow

Qiuxiang Huang et al.

Summary: The study investigates the nonlinear dynamics of a two-sided collapsible channel flow using an immersed boundary-lattice Boltzmann method, exploring chaotic behaviors and self-excited oscillations. The system exhibits a supercritical Hopf bifurcation leading to a period-1 limit cycle oscillation, and chaos can be reached through period-doubling and quasi-periodic bifurcations. Various factors such as symmetry breaking, unbalanced transmural pressure, and vorticity waves contribute to the onset of self-excited oscillations in the collapsible system.

Dynamic Behaviours of a Filament in a Viscoelastic Uniform Flow

Jingtao Ma et al.

Summary: The study found that the Reynolds number and Weissenberg number significantly affect the flapping motion and drag coefficient of a filament in a viscoelastic uniform flow. Higher inertia promotes the flapping motion, while the viscoelasticity of the fluid can either decrease or increase these behaviors depending on the specific conditions. The behaviors differ between Giesekus fluid and FENE-CR fluid in terms of critical Reynolds number and drag coefficient.
