Symmetry breaking of a closed flexible filament behind a rigid plate at low Reynolds numbers

Huanyu Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the motion modes transition and dynamic performance of a rigid-flexible coupling system in the flow at low Reynolds numbers. The system consists of a rigid plate and a trailing closed flexible filament, and numerical simulations using the immersed boundary method are conducted. Six motion modes are identified based on the movement of the filament and its symmetry. Drag reduction is observed at Re >= 40, mainly influenced by the pressure behind the filament. However, the drag reduction is weakened for filaments with Lr >= 2.57 due to the increased flow disturbance caused by their large width.

Drag reduction by flapping a pair of flexible filaments behind a cylinder

Qian Mao et al.

Summary: The hydrodynamic mechanism of drag reduction by flapping flexible filaments behind a cylinder was investigated using the penalty immersed boundary method. The effects of phase difference, attachment height, and flapping amplitude on drag reduction were studied. Flapping filaments weaken vortex shedding through destructive interaction, with out-of-phase filaments showing better drag reduction than in-phase filaments. Minimum drag is achieved at appropriate attachment height and flapping amplitude to avoid filament collision and weaken shear-layer-filament interaction. The clapping filaments are more effective than snaking filaments. The total drag decreases with increasing Reynolds number, transitioning from 2S mode to P + S mode wake pattern.

Flow control of an elastically mounted square cylinder by using an attached flexible plate

Jiang Yan Shao et al.

Summary: This work numerically investigates the flow control of an elastically mounted square cylinder by using an attached plate placing downstream. The effect of a solid plate with varying length on VIV suppression is analyzed, and significant VIV suppression can be achieved even with a short plate. The influence of flexibility is complex, with a short flexible plate being less effective and a long flexible plate with medium flexibility further enhancing VIV suppression.

Control of the flow around a finite square cylinder with a flexible plate attached at the free end

Hanfeng Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a flexible plate was used to modulate the aerodynamic forces on a wall-mounted finite square cylinder. It was found that the behavior of the plate and its length have significant effects on the aerodynamic forces. When the wind speed is below the critical velocity, the plate has a negligible influence on the forces; however, when the wind speed exceeds the critical velocity, the plate flaps and leads to a significant reduction in the forces.

Suppression of vortex-induced vibration of a circular cylinder by a finite-span flexible splitter plate

Guo-Peng Cui et al.

Summary: The control effect of VIV using a finite-span flexible splitter plate attached to the rear stagnation point of a circular cylinder is experimentally studied. The results show that the suppression efficiency of the flexible splitter plate is gradually improved with an increase in its width. Moreover, a finite-span flexible splitter plate can suppress VIV of a circular cylinder that has a much larger spanwise length.

Effects of multiple flexible vortex generators on the hydrothermal characteristics of a rectangular channel

Y. Amini et al.

Summary: In this study, the hydrothermal characteristics of heat sinks with multiple vortex generators (VGs) were investigated. The use of flexible splitters on the VGs significantly improved heat transfer capability and hydrothermal performance. By selecting proper configurations, the rejected heat can be increased by 190% at the expense of a 10% decrease in total hydrothermal efficiency.

Flow-induced vibration control of a circular cylinder by using flexible and rigid splitter plates

Guo-Peng Cui et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the control of flow-induced vibration (FIV) of a circular cylinder using a flexible splitter plate attached to the rear stagnation point. Compared to a rigid splitter plate, the flexible splitter plate performed better in suppressing vibration and changing the flow pattern in the wake, reducing the interaction between shear layers.

Drag reduction by flapping a flexible filament behind a stationary cylinder

Qian Mao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the hydrodynamic mechanism of drag reduction by flapping a flexible filament behind a stationary cylinder using the penalty immersed boundary method. The effects of filament parameters on drag reduction were examined, and three distinct flapping modes were observed. The oscillation and undulation modes were found to be more beneficial for drag reduction than the vortex-dominated mode.

Flow over rectangular cylinder: Effects of cylinder aspect ratio and Reynolds number

A. Mashhadi et al.

Summary: Numerical simulations were conducted to investigate unconfined flows over rectangular cylinders at different cross-sectional aspect ratios and Reynolds numbers. The study focused on the influence of the aspect ratio and Reynolds number on flow structure and aerodynamic parameters, identifying various flow separation and reattachment scenarios. The findings suggest that both aspect ratio and Reynolds number play a significant role in determining the flow characteristics.

The dynamics of flow-induced flutter of a thin flexible sheet

Dhiraj Kumar et al.

Summary: The study investigated the dynamics of flow-induced flutter of a thin flexible sheet attached to a streamlined support in a low-speed wind tunnel. The behavior of the sheet was found to change from low-amplitude vibration to large-amplitude flutter as wind speed increased, with the initiation of flutter occurring at the second mode limit cycle oscillation (LCO). The role of natural frequencies in the initiation and transition of LCO was highlighted, with PIV results showing accelerated flow over the sheet's surface inducing lift force and forming a large-scale undulating wake.

Effects of oncoming flow turbulence on the near wake and forces of a 3D square cylinder

Chongyu Zhao et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the aerodynamic forces and near wake of a 3D square cylinder at a low-speed wind tunnel, focusing on the effects of different turbulence intensities on the forces and near wake. The results showed that increasing turbulence intensity reduced the aerodynamic forces and longitudinal correlation for a 2D cylinder, but enhanced both for a 3D cylinder. Proper orthogonal decomposition analysis indicated that the near wake of the 2D cylinder became less organized with increasing turbulence intensity, while the near wake of the 3D cylinder became more coherent and organized.
