Efficient monolithic immersed boundary projection method for incompressible flows with heat transfer

Tiantian Xu et al.

Summary: Efficient monolithic immersed boundary projection methods with staggered time discretization were proposed for incompressible viscous flows with heat transfer. The main idea is to use a two-step approximate lower-upper decomposition technique to decouple the momentum and energy equations, including immersed boundary forcing. Various MIBPM variants based on forcing schemes were numerically evaluated. The proposed MIBPM presents accurate imposition of no-slip conditions and exhibits good stability for both two-dimensional and three-dimensional heat transfer flows over moving objects.

A three-dimensional fictitious domain method for direct numerical simulations of particle-laden flows with heat transfer

Peifei Fan et al.

Summary: In this study, a three-dimensional fictitious domain method is proposed for particulate flows with heat transfer. For the case of fixed particle temperature, an iterative scheme for the temperature Lagrange multiplier is proposed to overcome the spurious oscillation of the explicit scheme. Both explicit and implicit schemes are proposed for the solution of coupled fluid and solid temperature equations in the case of freely evolving particle temperature. The method is verified and applied to various test problems and simulations.

An efficient explicit immersed boundary-reconstructed lattice Boltzmann flux solver for isothermal fluid-structure interaction problems with large deformations and complex geometries

Buchen Wu et al.

Summary: In this paper, a novel approach for isothermal fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems is proposed, which combines a reconstructed lattice Boltzmann flux solver (RLBFS) and an explicit boundary condition-enforced immersed boundary method (EIB), and is suitable for solving complex FSI problems. By integrating with the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) method, moving boundary problems can be efficiently solved. The proposed approach has been extensively tested and evaluated on several benchmark cases, demonstrating its capability and flexibility for solving FSI problems.

An explicit immersed boundary-reconstructed thermal lattice Boltzmann flux solver for thermal-fluid-structure interaction problems

Buchen Wu et al.

Summary: Thermal-fluid-structure interaction is a common issue in natural environment and manmade devices. This study develops a novel coupling approach using EIB-RTLBFS to tackle TFSI problems. The experimental results demonstrate that EIB-RTLBFS can accurately predict the nonlinear characteristics of multiphysics systems.

An improved direct-forcing immersed boundary method for simulations of flow and heat transfer in particle-laden flows

Dong Wang et al.

Summary: In studies of particle-laden flow, the direct-forcing immersed boundary (IB) method is commonly used to fully resolve the flow around particles. However, interpolation functions used in the method can result in erroneous flow field, overestimated drag force, and inaccurately estimated interphase heat transfer rate with insufficient grid resolution. To address these issues, an improved direct-forcing IB method involving retraction of the Lagrangian points is proposed, which considers the interphase momentum and heat transfer simultaneously.

Heat transfer enhancement by a flexible inverted flag with an inclination angle

Jae Won Shin et al.

Summary: The present study proposes a heat transfer system with an inclined inverted flag as a vortex generator. A two-dimensional simulation is performed to analyze the effects of the inclination angle and bending rigidity of the flag on thermal performance. Four different modes are observed, with small-amplitude flapping and large-amplitude flapping modes found to be favorable in terms of heat transfer efficiency. Scaling analysis is conducted to explain the correlation between flapping kinematics and thermal quantities.

An overset boundary condition-enforced immersed boundary method for incompressible flows with large moving boundary domains

Xiang Zhao et al.

Summary: Conventional immersed boundary methods simplify boundary condition treatment by interpreting boundaries as forces in the governing equations. High computational cost is induced when using uniform meshes of high resolution near immersed boundaries, especially for flows with large moving boundary domains. The proposed overset BC-enforced IBM combines locally refined uniform meshes for local motion and a coarser background mesh for global motion, generating automatically using the Cartesian approach to save computational resources.

Efficient monolithic projection-based method for chemotaxis-driven bioconvection problems

Xiaomin Pan et al.

Summary: A non-iterative monolithic projection-based method is proposed to study the nonlinear dynamics of time-dependent chemotaxis-driven bioconvection problems. The method employs approximations to enhance computational efficiency while maintaining second-order temporal accuracy, and numerical simulations validate its performance. Results show that the method provides predictions consistent with previous works and improves time accuracy, reduces time-step limitations, and enhances computational efficiency.

Efficient boundary condition-enforced immersed boundary method for incompressible flows with moving boundaries

Xiang Zhao et al.

Summary: In this study, the original boundary condition-enforced immersed boundary method is improved with the use of conjugate gradient technique and explicit technique for simulating incompressible flows with moving boundaries. The computational efficiency of the improved IBM is demonstrated to be higher than other popular IBM methods, especially the explicit technique-based IBM with a linear computational complexity. Coupled with D1Q4 lattice Boltzmann flux solver, the IBM with conjugate gradient technique and explicit technique successfully simulate two-dimensional and three-dimensional flows with second order accuracy in space.
