Comprehensive quasi-steady force correlations for compressible flow through random particle suspensions

Andreas Nygard Osnes et al.

Summary: This article presents models for quasi-steady drag, quasi-steady drag variation, and transverse forces in compressible flows through random, fixed particle suspensions. The correlations are formulated based on drag force measurements obtained from particle-resolved simulation data covering a range of flow conditions from subsonic to supersonic. The newly proposed drag models extend existing models for incompressible dense gas-solid flows to finite Mach numbers, while the transverse particle force model is novel and incorporates the covariation between streamwise and transverse forces.

Numerical estimations of lunar regolith trajectories and damage potential due to rocket plumes

Douglas Fontes et al.

Summary: This study presents a numerical investigation of rocket plumes carrying regolith particles in the lunar environment. The results provide insights into the relationship between particle angle and velocity with particle diameter, initial position, lander altitude, and mass, and offer a numerical correlation to avoid regolith abrasive blasting.

Kinetic modeling of fractal aggregate mobility

Akhil Marayikkottu Vijayan et al.

Summary: The study investigates the mobility of irregular fractal-like aggregates formed by the aggregation of monomers, revealing different transport mechanisms compared to their spherical counterpart. The viscous contribution of parameters such as drag and lift is specifically focused on, with a non-linear correlation developed to describe these parameters.

Effect of reactive B-Ti powder morphology on its removal from a surface and ignition by electro-static discharge

Shomik Mukhopadhyay et al.

Summary: Electrostatic discharges were found to lift and ignite spherical and irregular particles in Ti-B nanocomposites. Higher voltage and electrodes closer to the cavity improved the lifting and ignition effect. Spherical powders were lifted more efficiently than irregular powders, and ignited spherical particles were brighter than irregular particles. Instantly lifted particles traveled at approximately 100 m/s, while later lifted particles moved at slower velocities.

Simulations of Ash and Sand Impact on a Hypersonic Forebody

Brian Connolly et al.

Summary: Hypersonic vehicles operating at high speeds in the atmosphere may suffer surface damage and sensitive component destruction due to solid particles present. Research indicates that particles with diameters between 4 and 100 μm are responsible for a majority of surface impact energy, while the effects of compressibility and shape on particle drag can be significant.

Modeling of dusty gas flows due to plume impingement on a lunar surface

Arun K. Chinnappan et al.

Summary: A novel two-way coupled dusty-gas flow model has been developed in the DSMC framework for the study of dust dispersion on the lunar surface. Gas-grain interactions are modeled through momentum and energy exchange between phases, and the model is validated against theoretical relations for a zero-dimensional simulation. The computational model is used to analyze the influence of particle diameter and hovering altitudes on gas and grain phases, as well as dust transportation.

Influence of particle non-dilute effects on its dispersion in particle-laden blast wave systems

Akhil Marayikkottu et al.

Summary: The study numerically investigates the interaction of blast waves with dense particle distributions, revealing the role of non-dilute particle effects on the dynamics of the two-phase flow system. Inter-particle collisions decrease total particle kinetic energy in the early stages, while aerodynamic interactions tend to dissipate particle kinetic energy in later stages.
