Turbidity currents propagating down an inclined slope: particle auto-suspension

Jiafeng Xie et al.

Summary: In this study, a large-eddy simulation and discrete element method coupled model is used to investigate the auto-suspension mechanism of particle-laden gravity currents over an inclined slope. The results show that the auto-suspension particles are mainly concentrated near the current head and their number increases and then decreases during the current evolution. Increasing the particle concentration enhances the flow velocity and improves the auto-suspension capacity, while increasing the slope angle slightly increases the velocity of the current head without significant effect on the total force.

Coherent structures, turbulence intermittency, and anisotropy of gravity currents propagating on a rough and porous bed

Dongrui Han et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of rough and porous bed and sedimentation processes on the characteristics of saline and turbidity currents. It finds that the local current concentration responds differently to turbulence bursting events, with saline currents having an immediate response while turbidity currents respond slowly. The study also examines the transfer of turbulent momentum fluxes in different directions and shows that the formation of sweep and ejection events depends on the directions of flux transfer. Additionally, the study explores the anisotropy of gravity currents and its sensitivity to the RP boundary and sedimentation processes.

On the definition, evolution, and properties of the outer edge of gravity currents: A direct-numerical and large-eddy simulation study

Jorge S. Salinas et al.

Summary: Gravity currents are studied in this work, focusing on the flow of a heavier fluid along the bottom of a sloping bed, beneath a stagnant lighter ambient fluid. The thickness of the current increases due to entrainment of ambient fluid. The rate of penetration of mean momentum, mean concentration, and turbulence-related quantities into the ambient fluid are analyzed, with a comparison to wall-bounded turbulent flows.

Mixing, entrainment and energetics of gravity currents released from two-layer stratified locks

Rui Zhu et al.

Summary: We conducted simulations to explore mixing, entrainment, and energy budgets of gravity currents in stratified locks. The density and layer thickness ratios determine the propagation speed and density structure of the gravity current. We propose a theoretical model based on vorticity budget to predict the overall current height and front velocity in situations where the lower layer is faster. The energy budget analysis reveals the conversion of potential into kinetic energy and energy transfer between the different layers of the gravity current and the ambient fluid.

Shear instability at the interface between fluid and granular medium in a horizontal rotating cylinder

Veronika Dyakova et al.

Summary: The stability of the interface between a low-viscosity fluid and a granular medium in a horizontally rotating cylinder is experimentally investigated. Two cases are considered, namely, plastic particles in a more dense fluid and plastic particles in a less dense fluid. The stability threshold and size of regular ripples are studied in relation to rotation rate, relative density of the two media, and volume of granular material. The observed instability is similar to the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability observed in classical fluids, but with potential differences due to the specific characteristics of granular rheology.

A Numerical Investigation of Transformation Rates from Debris Flows to Turbidity Currents under Shearing Mechanisms

Yizhe Li et al.

Summary: This study aims to better understand the mechanisms of transforming debris flows into turbidity currents by simulating submarine landslide transportation processes using computational fluid dynamics. The two-phase mixture module is adopted to mimic the interactions between slurry and ambient water, and the rheological behaviors of the slurries are described using the Herschel-Bulkley model. Through a series of case studies, transformation rate formula coefficients are fitted, and it is demonstrated that the slurry is fully transformed into turbidity currents before deposition.

Gravity currents interacting with slopes and overhangs

M. R. Maggi et al.

Summary: When a gravity current interacts with a barrier, it is reflected back as a moving hydraulic jump or bore. This phenomenon has significant implications for estuarine mixing and sediment reworking in the oceanographic field. Laboratory experiments and theoretical analysis have been conducted to investigate the reflection processes of two-dimensional gravity currents interacting with slopes and overhanging barriers. The results show that the spatial position of the dense current and the point where the reflection process starts can be reasonably predicted using shallow-water theory. The analysis of the density fields reveals areas of increased dilution within the dense current due to its reflection. However, the overall entrainment parameter is only slightly affected by the presence of steep slopes or overhangs.

A methodology to predict the run-out distance of submarine landslides

Xingsen Guo et al.

Summary: In this study, the method of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was used to simulate a fluidized submarine landslide with shear thinning non-Newtonian fluids under different contact conditions. The accuracy of the CFD method was validated and various experiments were systematically performed. The stress state and causes of the submarine landslide mass during its movement in ambient water were revealed, and the submarine landslide-seabed contact relation was identified as a decisive influencing factor. Furthermore, a methodology based on energy conservation was presented to predict the run-out distance of the submarine landslide mass, and equations to quantify the process were established and validated by numerical results. This provides a significant basis for the prediction of marine engineering geological and hydrodynamic hazards related to submarine landslides.

Summary: Ocean mining activities have been ongoing for nearly 70 years, contributing greatly to industrialization. With the increasing energy demand and efforts to achieve a low-carbon economy, deep seabed mining will play a crucial role in addressing energy and resource-related issues in the future. However, deep seabed mining is still in the exploratory stage and faces challenges posed by the high-pressure, low-temperature, and complex geologic and hydrodynamic environments in deep-sea mining areas, which are inaccessible to human activities. It is necessary to make considerable efforts to ensure sustainable, economic, reliable, and safe deep seabed mining.

How is a turbidite actually deposited?

Zhiyuan Ge et al.

Summary: The deposition of classic turbidites is traditionally thought to be a continuous process of sediment accumulation by a gradually waning turbidity current. However, through numerical simulations and rock-record examples, it has been shown that the depositional event involves many brief periods of nondeposition due to hydraulic fluctuations driven by interfacial Kelvin-Helmholtz waves. This suggests that the stratigraphic record of sedimentation may be incomplete even at the scale of a single turbidite.

Effect of secondary currents on the flow and turbulence in partially filled pipes

Yan Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of secondary currents on friction factor, statistics, and large-scale turbulent motion in partially filled pipes using large-eddy simulations. The results show that secondary currents originate from the corner between the free surface and the pipe walls, and their presence reduces the friction factor and the strength of near-wall structures. Therefore, partially filled pipe flows have lower drag and turbulent energy compared to fully filled pipe flows.

Turbulence Processes Within Turbidity Currents

Mathew G. Wells et al.

Summary: Turbidity currents are density-driven flows that transport vast quantities of particulate material across lake and ocean floors, sometimes generated by slope failure. The dynamics of turbidity currents, including internal turbulent mixing and flow around channel bends, are influenced by internal density and velocity structure, as well as the Coriolis force. Understanding these processes is crucial for comprehending some of the largest sedimentary structures on Earth's surface.
