Experimental and numerical investigation of beer foam

Wenjing Lyu et al.

Summary: The frothy foam on top of beer is produced by gas bubbles, mainly carbon dioxide, rising to the surface. The chemical components that produce the head are wort protein, yeast, and hop residue. Achieving a precise prediction of beer foam formation and collapse is challenging due to complex numerical models required to account for these nonlinear effects.

On the equivalent thermo-physical properties for modeling building walls with unknown stratigraphy

Luca Evangelisti et al.

Summary: This study conducted experimental campaigns on building walls to generate equivalent homogeneous walls through an inverse approach, addressing the issue of information lack and determining the equivalent thermo-physical properties that best reproduce the thermal behaviors of the original walls. Energy simulations showed a range of percentage difference of +/- 10% between the equivalent and original models for both energy demands and peak loads.

Novel models for predicting the shape and motion of an ascending bubble in Newtonian liquids using machine learning

Wen-Xuan She et al.

Summary: In this study, the shape and motion predictions of a single bubble freely ascending in Newtonian liquids are explored using machine learning. New models for the aspect ratio E and drag coefficient C-D are proposed, which show significant improvements compared to conventional correlations. The models have good capabilities in predicting the minimum E and show good agreement with experimental results. The study demonstrates the potential of machine learning in predicting the behavior of bubbles in fluids.

Numerical study of heat transfer, flow fields, turbulent length scales, and anisotropy in corrugated heat exchanger channels

G. Karlsson et al.

Summary: In this study, large eddy simulation (LES) is used to investigate the convectively dominated heat transfer in a corrugated heat exchanger channel. Visualization techniques are employed to elucidate the unsteady flow and heat transfer processes. A comparison between LES and Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes simulations reveals significant differences. Furthermore, different grid resolution requirements are found for the flow and heat transfer processes in LES.

Effects of Reynolds number and average angle of attack on the laminar scaling of oscillating foils

Suyash Verma et al.

Summary: The variation in thrust generation of an oscillating foil was evaluated numerically for different conditions. The accuracy of laminar scaling in predicting thrust was found to weaken at higher reduced frequencies and amplitudes. Pressure was found to dominate the total thrust generated, especially at high frequencies. The quantitative assessment was supported by the qualitative evaluation of the vortex structure.

Transient electro-osmotic flow in rotating soft microchannel

Shrikant Gandharv et al.

Summary: Exploiting secondary velocities produced by Coriolis forces in Lab-on-CD systems is key to achieving better transport in pharmaceutical and biomedical applications. We explore the transient behavior of velocities in rotating microchannels aided by a grafted polyelectrolyte layer (a soft layer). The size of the polyelectrolyte layer grafted to the walls aids in better control of the flow velocities and oscillations.

Aibo Wei et al.

Summary: This paper reviews recent progress in experimental measurements and modeling strategies for investigating cryogenic cavitation. It analyzes the thermodynamic properties of cryogenic fluids, introduces different scaling laws for thermal effects estimation, and discusses advancements in cavitation visualization, cavity dynamics, and multi-physical field measurements. The paper also presents commonly used cavitation and turbulence models in numerical simulation and examines modifications and improvements for modeling thermal effects in cryogenic cavitation. Additionally, it reviews critical issues in cryogenic fluid cavitation research, including thermal effects, unsteady shedding mechanisms, cavitation-vortex interactions, and cavitation-induced vibration/noise, and provides an outlook for further research in this field.

Influence of thermal properties on hydrothermal waves in evaporating sessile droplets

Ji-Long Zhu et al.

Summary: The study investigates the influence of nondimensional thermal properties on Marangoni instabilities, particularly hydrothermal waves, in evaporating sessile droplets. It is found that certain combinations of Marangoni number, evaporative cooling number, and relative heat conductivity promote the appearance of hydrothermal waves, while a large Prandtl number inhibits their occurrence. The critical Marangoni numbers for the appearance of hydrothermal waves are determined, providing insights into the influence of thermal properties on the behavior of sessile droplets.
