Experimental studies on pressure drag and aerodynamic noise of cylinder with porous coatings

Chen Xu et al.

Summary: The present experimental study aims to clarify the inconsistent viewpoints on the reduction or increase of drag by porous coatings on a circular cylinder. It also investigates the optimal parameters of porous materials for suppressing wall pressure fluctuations and acoustic pressure.

Generation and characterization of fully developed state in open channel flow

S. Das et al.

Summary: The characteristics of fully developed smooth open channel flow are studied using two-component planar particle image velocimetry. Flow properties are explored by identifying uniform momentum zones and conditional averaging of flow variables. The difference in flow properties between developing and fully developed flow is evaluated.

Effect of free surface perturbation on fully developed smooth open channel flow

Subhadip Das et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of the shear layer generated from light floater boards on flow characteristics. The results showed that the perturbation caused by the floaters altered the mean velocity profiles and resulted in negative shear stress near the free surface. Additionally, the depth of the shear layer penetrating into the flow increased with the increase in perturbation.

Drag reduction in cylindrical wake flow using porous material

Hai Du et al.

Summary: Porous materials have the potential to be used in acoustic noise reduction and flow drag reduction control due to their unique pore structure. In this study, experiments were conducted in a low-speed wind tunnel to investigate the effects and mechanism of drag reduction on the flow around a circular cylinder using different permeable porous materials. The results showed that the application of porous materials could expand the vortex region, decrease the frequency of vortex shedding and magnitude of vorticity fluctuation, and significantly reduce the Reynolds shear stress.

The effect of local thermal non-equilibrium on the onset of thermal instability for a metallic foam

Romulo Bessi Freitas et al.

Summary: This study investigates mixed convection in metallic foams modeled with Darcy's law under local thermal non-equilibrium conditions. The results show that local thermal non-equilibrium always has a stabilizing effect, and the spanwise uniform mode is always the most unstable. However, the number of equally unstable cell patterns at the onset of convective instability increases with both the aspect ratio and the local thermal non-equilibrium strength.

Flow around a surface-mounted finite circular cylinder completely submerged within the bottom boundary layer

Di Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the flow characteristics and bed-shear-stress distribution around a finite circular cylinder at a fixed Reynolds number and different aspect ratios. It finds that the vortex structure changes with aspect ratio and the bed-shear-stress amplification magnitude is influenced by the horseshoe vortices. Different critical aspect ratios are obtained for various flow variables.

Enhancement of heat transfer from a horizontal cylinder wrapped with whole and segmented layers of metal foam

David Boules et al.

Summary: The study found that using metal foam layers to wrap a horizontal cylinder can enhance heat transfer performance, with the segmented metal foam layer configuration at an optimum angle of incidence providing the best heat transfer enhancement with a lower pressure drop, signifying the highest overall performance factor.

Thermal management of power electronics with liquid cooled metal foam heat sink

Yongtong Li et al.

Summary: This paper presents a study on the performance of liquid cooled aluminum foam heat sinks using experimental and numerical methods. It is found that the permeability decreases and inertial coefficient increases with increasing pore density. The AF heat sink demonstrates significantly better thermal performance compared to an empty channel, and the enhancement by 20 PPI foam is negligible. The LTNE model provides more accurate predictions of temperature distributions than the LTE model.

Time-resolved wake dynamics of finite wall-mounted circular cylinders submerged in a turbulent boundary layer

Ebenezer E. Essel et al.

Summary: The study investigates the unsteady flow separation and wake dynamics around finite wall-mounted circular cylinders immersed in a turbulent boundary layer using time-resolved particle image velocimetry. The results show that the cylinders encounter elevated turbulence levels and strong mean shear in the boundary layer, leading to significant effects on the attachment length and motion of the reverse-flow region on the top surface of the cylinders.

Summary: This study reproduced the main flow features around a square-section building model via spectral proper orthogonal decomposition (SPOD) analysis and presented a spectrum view of the turbulent structures with primary frequency and relative intensity. Furthermore, the composition of kinetic energy within different local parts of the sampling field was analyzed using local-space SPOD spectrum.
