Shuang Yu Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, the effect of different geometric parameters of rectangular micro cavities on the heat transfer capacity of pool boiling was explored. The results showed that the rectangular micro cavity structure can enhance the heat transfer performance, while the width and spacing have a significant impact on the heat flux.

A lattice Boltzmann investigation of the saturated pool boiling heat transfer on micro-cavity/fin surfaces

A. Qin Lou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the saturated pool boiling heat transfer on micro-cavity and micro-fin surfaces using a mesoscopic phase change lattice Boltzmann method. It is found that both micro-cavity and micro-fin surfaces enhance nucleate boiling heat transfer compared to smooth surfaces. Micro-cavity is more conducive to bubble nucleation, while micro-fin is more conducive to bubble departure. Micro-cavity surface has a higher nucleate boiling heat transfer, while micro-fin surface has a higher critical heat flux.

Pool boiling on a biphilic surface where bubbles can move horizontally on the surface

Yakang Xia et al.

Summary: In this study, a silicon surface with special wettability was fabricated and experimentally studied. The biphilic surface showed significant enhancement of heat transfer at low heat fluxes but reduced heat transfer at high heat fluxes in nucleate boiling. Additionally, the biphilic surface extended the heat flux and surface temperature ranges of nucleate boiling, with a approximately 14% increase of critical heat flux.

Recalibration of LBM Populations for Construction of Grid Refinement with No Interpolation

Arseniy Berezin et al.

Summary: Grid refinement is a method used to reduce computing costs while maintaining high accuracy in fluid simulation. In the Lattice Boltzmann Method, this often involves interpolation. However, we have developed a method that eliminates the need for interpolation by using moment matching and recalibration procedures to transfer information between different LBM stencils. This method has been verified on various benchmarks and can potentially be used to build grids with adaptive geometry.

Numerical Investigation of Conjugate Heat Transfer and Natural Convection Using the Lattice-Boltzmann Method for Realistic Thermophysical Properties

Michael Landl et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of conjugate heat transfer on lattice-Boltzmann method (LBM) simulations and the suitability of LBM for simulating industry-related applications. Two test cases were conducted. The results show that the fluid relaxation time should be selected in the range of 0.5 to 1.5 for stable simulations. The temporally constant thermophysical properties of LBM are the primary constraint for processes with a large temperature spread.

Experimental study on pool boiling enhancement by unique designing of porous media with a wettability gradient

Xiao Yuan et al.

Summary: High heat flux dissipation in pool boiling heat transfer can be achieved by controlling the bubble escape and liquid replenishment paths. A copper foam with a wettability gradient is designed to generate separate liquid-vapor pathways for pool boiling enhancement. Experimental results show that the copper foam with different wettability gradient influences the liquid replenishment and bubble escape flow. Comparing different copper foam structures, the super-hydrophilic top with superhydrophobic bottom (SHPiT-SHPoB) and the super-hydrophobic top with super-hydrophilic bottom (SHPoT-SHPiB) structures achieve higher critical heat flux and maximum heat transfer coefficient. The study establishes bubble escape forms and liquid replenishment models, providing detailed explanations for pool boiling enhancement.

Improved multi-relaxation time thermal pseudo-potential lattice Boltzmann method with multi-block grid and complete unit conversion for liquid-vapor phase transition

Wenhan Zheng et al.

Summary: In this paper, the thermal pseudo-potential lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) is improved by introducing multi-relaxation time operators and deriving dimensionless evolution equations. The accuracy and efficiency of the method are further enhanced by improving the energy equation, adopting a more accurate equation of state, and modifying the surface tension coefficient. Moreover, a three-layer boundary structure is proposed to incorporate the intermolecular force and internal heat source term. These improvements enable efficient and accurate simulation of liquid-vapor phase transition.

Enhanced pool boiling on microstructured surfaces with spatially-controlled mixed wettability

X. Z. Sun et al.

Summary: Surface wettability is crucial for pool boiling heat transfer performance. This study focuses on microstructured surfaces with spatially-controlled mixed wettability and investigates their pool boiling performance. The results show that the size of hydrophobic spots on the tops of microstructures has a significant influence on the boiling performance. By optimizing the combined effects of mixed wettability and microstructures, the new microstructured surface outperforms plain surfaces and those with entirely modified wettability. The heat transfer coefficient (HTC) and critical heat flux (CHF) are significantly enhanced.

Summary: Experimental studies were conducted to investigate the combined effects of micro-cavities and surface wettability on pool boiling heat transfer performance and mechanisms. Four types of surfaces were tested, and the results showed that the combination of micro-cavity structure and superhydrophilicity improved the boiling heat transfer performance in the high heat flux region, while the combination of micro-cavity structure and super-hydrophobicity yielded better performance at lower heat flux.

Summary: In this paper, the pool boiling heat transfer on pillar-structured surfaces with different wettability patterns and channel-to-pillar width ratios was experimentally investigated. The results showed that the effect of wettability patterns on boiling performance was similar to that on plain surfaces, but the differences between hydrophilic and hydrophobic patterns increased with the decrease of the channel-to-pillar width ratio.

A numerical investigation of bubble dynamics in a ferrofluid by improved multicomponent multiphase pseudopotential lattice Boltzmann model coupled with magnetic field solver

Yichen Huang et al.

Summary: The coupled model proposed in this study demonstrates good reliability and accuracy in simulating the dynamics of bubbles in a ferrofluid under a uniform magnetic field. The variation of distances parallel to and perpendicular to the magnetic field at different magnetic Bond numbers results in changes in nonlinear deformation effects, bubble motion modes, bubble oscillation amplitudes, and bubble deformations throughout the process. Different distances at the same magnetic Bond number have almost no effect on the time of bubble oscillation and deformation after stabilization.
