Geometry dependence of viscoelastic instabilities through porous media

V. Dzanic et al.

Summary: This study numerically investigates the geometrical dependence of viscoelastic instabilities in geometrically complex applications where viscoelastic fluids naturally occur, such as porous media. The study demonstrates that the viscoelastic instability behavior is the same as previously reported in ideal pore geometries at low elasticity, but transitions into strong transient behavior at higher elasticity, with the most non-ideal pore geometry showing the strongest instability response.

Effect of viscoelasticity on displacement processes in porous media

Michael Jung et al.

Summary: Adding high molecular weight polymers to the invading phase can improve the displacement efficiency of capillary entrapments in porous media, which has applications in enhanced oil recovery and soil remediation. The flow behavior of viscoelastic polymer solutions, characterized by increased viscosity contrast and unstable flow, can lead to an additional displacement mechanism. A microfluidic approach is employed to study the underlying physics and mechanism of this enhanced displacement, revealing the role of viscoelastic fluid features and flow geometry in overcoming the capillary threshold and displacing the capillary entrapments.

Oscillative Trapping of a Droplet in a Converging Channel Induced by Elastic Instability

Chiyu Xie et al.

Summary: Trapping of droplets in microchannels can occur when viscoelastic fluids are injected, and this behavior cannot be explained by classical theories. The onset of droplet oscillation is determined by a critical Deborah number, which indicates when the droplet will be permanently trapped.

Birefringent strands drive the flow of viscoelastic fluids past obstacles

O. Mokhtari et al.

Summary: The flow of polymer solutions through solid obstacles or porous media is a complex phenomenon with rich physical effects. This study investigates the role of viscoelasticity in inducing a nonlinear flow response and increasing flow resistance. The researchers discovered that localized zones of high polymeric stress, known as birefringent strands, drive the flow and cause a reorganization of the flow patterns. This reorganization leads to an increase in the viscous dissipation of the solvent and stretching of polymer molecules, which result in an increase in overall flow resistance.

Effect of geometric disorder on chaotic viscoelastic porous media flows

A. Chauhan et al.

Summary: This study presents a numerical investigation of viscoelastic fluid flows in porous media. It is found that geometric disorder increases chaotic fluctuations in the flow, which is attributed to the formation of preferential paths and highly curved streamlines. The chaotic flow behavior is strongly influenced by the competition between strain-hardening and shear-thinning behaviors of the viscoelastic fluid.

Elastic Turbulence: An Experimental View on Inertialess Random Flow

Victor Steinberg

Summary: Elastic turbulence (ET) is a chaotic flow phenomenon that occurs when a tiny amount of long polymer molecules is added to a viscous solvent laminar flow. ET is characterized by polymer stretching, which generates elastic stress and affects the flow. This review examines the statistical and spectral properties of the velocity field, pressure fluctuations, and friction factor scaling of ET in different flow geometries, based on experiments, numerical simulations, and theoretical descriptions.
