Evidence for the general dominance of proton shells in low-energy fission

K. Mahata et al.

Summary: A regular pattern is observed in the low-energy asymmetric fission of neutron-deficient nuclei around lead, with the leading role attributed to the light-fragment nuclear charge. This finding challenges previous theoretical interpretations and highlights the importance of proton configurations driven by quadrupole-octupole correlations. The survey of a wider area of the nuclear chart points to a lack of quantitative understanding of the competition between macroscopic and microscopic forces. Furthermore, a connection between old and new islands of asymmetric fission indicates a potential pathway towards a unified theory of fission.

Probing entrance channel effects in fusion-fission dynamics through neutron multiplicity measurement of Rn-208

Neeraj Kumar et al.

Summary: The neutron multiplicities before and after scission were measured for the fission of Rn-208 induced by Si-30+Hf-178 and Ti-48+Gd-160 reactions. Significant differences were found in the pre-scission neutron multiplicities of these two systems. The study emphasizes the crucial contribution of neutrons emitted during the fusion process in determining the neutron multiplicities for the present systems.

Experimental Evidence for Common Driving Effects in Low-Energy Fission from Sublead to Actinides

C. Schmitt et al.

Summary: The isotopic distributions of fragments from the fission of neutron-deficient 178 Hg nuclide were studied, revealing a surprising dominance of the proton subsystem with atomic numbers between Z = 28 and 50. The study also compared the average fragment N/Z ratio and prompt neutron multiplicity with current knowledge from actinide fission, showing a striking consistency. Discussions on the origin of nuclear charge polarization in fission and fragment deformation at scission were also included.
