Galactic diffuse gamma rays meet the PeV frontier

P. De La Torre Luque et al.

Summary: The Tibet AS gamma and LHAASO collaborations have observed gamma-ray diffuse emission from the Galactic plane with energy up to the PeV level. They discuss the implications of these results for cosmic-ray physics, considering non-uniform cosmic-ray transport scenarios. By using the DRAGON and HERMES codes, they analyze the spectral distributions of the emission for different models.

Observation of high-energy neutrinos from the Galactic plane

IceCube Collaborat

Summary: The origin of high-energy cosmic rays, atomic nuclei that impact Earth's atmosphere continuously, is still unknown. Due to the deflection caused by interstellar magnetic fields, cosmic rays from within the Milky Way arrive at Earth from random directions. However, cosmic rays interact with matter near their sources and during propagation, leading to the production of high-energy neutrinos.

Galactic gamma-ray and neutrino emission from interacting cosmic-ray nuclei

M. Breuhaus et al.

Summary: We present a study on the expected emissions of very-high-energy (VHE) to ultra-high-energy (UHE) gamma-rays and neutrinos from interacting cosmic rays in our Galaxy, and compare them with the latest results for the Galactic UHE diffuse emission. The study highlights the importance of considering both the mixed cosmic-ray composition and gamma-ray absorption. We adopt the wounded-nucleon model for nucleus interactions and provide parameterizations for the resulting gamma-ray and neutrino production. The shielding effect of nucleon clustering inside nuclei is shown to have a measurable impact on gamma-ray production, particularly near breaks and cutoffs in mixed-composition particle spectra. Changes in composition around the cosmic ray spectrum's 'knee' also have noticeable effects on the diffuse neutrino and gamma-ray emission spectra. Current and near-future detectors are capable of probing these differences in the energy range from 10 TeV to 1 PeV, which would help test the paradigm of a universal cosmic ray spectrum and composition throughout the Galaxy.

Unresolved Sources Naturally Contribute to PeV Gamma-Ray Diffuse Emission Observed by Tibet ASγ

V. Vecchiotti et al.

Summary: The Tibet AS gamma experiment measured the total diffuse gamma-ray emission from the Galactic disk in the sub-PeV energy range for the first time. Predictions were made about the contribution of unresolved pulsar-powered sources based on the analysis of TeV sources. It was found that the additional diffuse component and the truly diffuse emission well accounted for the Tibet data.

Galactic cosmic ray propagation: sub-PeV diffuse gamma-ray and neutrino emission

Bing-Qiang Qiao et al.

Summary: The Tibet AS gamma experiment has reported the measurement of sub-PeV diffuse gamma-ray emission from the Galactic disk, providing direct evidence that Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCRs) can be accelerated beyond PeV energies. However, there is a tension between the sub-PeV diffuse gamma-ray and the local CR spectrum, indicating a need for further investigation.

Ultrahigh-energy diffuse gamma-ray emission from cosmic-ray interactions with the medium surrounding acceleration sources

Pei-pei Zhang et al.

Summary: The study proposes a new cosmic ray propagation model that suggests the interactions between cosmic rays and the medium surrounding the sources, which were previously neglected, can explain new experimental data and provide a consistent description of secondary species. This model indicates that the electron spectrum above 10 TeV will experience a hardening due to the included secondary component, which can be tested in future experiments.

Discovery of the Ultrahigh-energy Gamma-Ray Source LHAASO J2108+5157

Zhen Cao et al.

Summary: The discovery of an ultrahigh-energy gamma-ray source, LHAASO J2108+5157, was reported by analyzing data from LHAASO-KM2A. Significant excess of gamma-ray induced showers was observed, with a harder spectrum demanded at lower energies. The position of the gamma-ray emission is correlated with a giant molecular cloud, supporting a hadronic origin.

Observation of the Crab Nebula with LHAASO-KM2A-a performance study

F. Aharonian et al.

Summary: KM2A, a sub-array of LHAASO, is designed to observe a large fraction of the northern sky for gamma-ray sources above 10 TeV. This paper presents the data analysis pipeline and first observation of the Crab Nebula by KM2A, detecting gamma-ray signals with high significance. The energy spectrum of the Crab Nebula in the range 10-250 TeV is consistent with previous measurements, indicating the potential discovery of new ultrahigh-energy gamma-ray phenomena.

Ultrahigh-energy photons up to 1.4 petaelectronvolts from 12 γ-ray Galactic sources

Zhen Cao et al.

Summary: The extension of the cosmic-ray spectrum beyond 1 petaelectronvolt indicates the existence of PeVatrons, cosmic-ray factories that accelerate particles to PeV energies. Detection of ultrahigh-energy gamma radiation is a key signature of PeVatrons, with ongoing efforts to locate and identify these extreme accelerators. Despite detecting high-energy gamma rays from various sources, the exact origin and identity of the PeVatrons responsible for the ultrahigh-energy gamma rays remain unknown.

Measurement of the Cosmic Ray Helium Energy Spectrum from 70 GeV to 80 TeV with the DAMPE Space Mission

F. Alemanno et al.

Summary: This study reports the measurement of the energy spectrum of cosmic ray helium nuclei from 70 GeV to 80 TeV using data recorded by DAMPE over 4.5 years. It observed a spectrum hardening at about 1.3 TeV and a spectral softening at about 34 TeV, with a significant value of 4.3 sigma. The measurements suggest a particle charge dependent softening energy, although uncertainties do not rule out a dependence on the number of nucleons.

Origin of Galactic Sub-PeV Diffuse Gamma-Ray Emission: Constraints from High-energy Neutrino Observations

Ruo-Yu Liu et al.

Summary: Recently discovered diffuse gamma-rays from the Galactic disk in a specific energy range may be related to conventional Galactic cosmic-ray propagation models, but tension arises with the non-detection of Galactic neutrino emissions by the IceCube neutrino telescope. Further analysis suggests that the presence of additional cosmic-ray components from sources like the Cygnus Cocoon region could alleviate this tension, implying the existence of extreme accelerators in the Cygnus region.
