Criteria for Crack Formation and Air Invasion in Drying Colloidal Suspensions

Paul Lilin et al.

Summary: The drying process of sessile drops of aqueous colloidal suspensions leads to the formation of dense particle deposits. By using a hydrodynamic model, it has been found that the pressure inside the deposit controls the formation of cracks and the onset of air invasion, and also explains the transition between two distinct air invasion regimes.

Crack morphologies in drying suspension drops

Philippe Bourrianne et al.

Summary: This study reveals the formation of solid deposits with various thicknesses and crack morphologies during the drying process of aqueous suspension of nanoparticles, controlled by the initial particle volume fraction. The different regimes exhibit a common avalanche-like crack propagation dynamics due to the delamination of the deposit from the substrate.
