Autocorrelations from emergent bistability in homeostatic spiking neural networks on neuromorphic hardware

Benjamin Cramer et al.

Summary: A fruitful approach towards neuromorphic computing is to mimic mechanisms of the brain in physical devices, which has led to successful replication of neuronlike dynamics and learning in the past. However, there remains a large set of neural self-organization mechanisms whose role for neuromorphic computing has yet to be explored. Here, we study the emergent collective dynamics in a homeostatically regulated neuromorphic device that emulates a network of excitatory and inhibitory leaky integrate-and-fire neurons and find that temporal correlations can originate from an emergent bistability.

Sampling effects and measurement overlap can bias the inference of neuronal avalanches

Joao Pinheiro Neto et al.

Summary: It is currently not possible to sample the entire mammalian brain with single-neuron precision. The sampling technique used, whether spikes or coarse-sampled activity, affects the observed correlations and signatures of criticality. When the distance between electrodes is small, overlapping regions are sampled, increasing the correlation between the signals.

Self-Organized Criticality in the Brain

Dietmar Plenz et al.

Summary: Self-organized criticality (SOC) refers to the ability of complex systems to evolve towards a second-order phase transition, with interactions between system components in the cortical layers demonstrating precise coordination between up-states, nested oscillations, and neuronal avalanches, providing compelling evidence for SOC in the brain.
