The physics of heart rhythm disorders

Wouter-Jan Rappel

Summary: This article reviews the application of quantitative methodologies in exploring the dynamics of arrhythmias. It starts with describing single-cell models and progresses to discuss the pattern formation, mechanisms, and experimental/clinical results related to arrhythmias. The article also introduces treatment options and the use of statistical physics tools in understanding the dynamics of arrhythmias.

Optimal entrainment for removal of pinned spiral waves

Tuhin Subhra Das et al.

Summary: In this study, a strategy for unpinning cardiac fibrillation is proposed using phase analysis and optimal control. Synchronization of pinned spiral waves on heterogeneous obstacles is achieved using a time-varying external voltage gradient, and unpinning is performed simultaneously at appropriate stimulation moments. Numerical validation demonstrates the feasibility of this strategy.

Control of the chirality of spiral waves and recreation of spatial excitation patterns through optogenetics

Teng-Chao Li et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the reversal of spiral wave chirality through rotating spiral-shaped illumination, and shows how this method can be used to control and create desired spatial excitation patterns. It was also found that the control process is sensitive to the area of illuminated region.

Intermittent trapping of spiral waves in a cardiac model

Wouter-Jan Rappel

Summary: Research indicates that spiral waves can be permanently or intermittently trapped by tissue heterogeneities. Simulations in a cardiac model show that heterogeneities of sufficient strength or size can lead to a spiral wave being trapped for a few rotations before dislodging. The findings suggest that this trapping phenomenon can be explained by a particle model and quantified through a phase diagram.

The transient outward potassium current plays a key role in spiral wave breakup in ventricular tissue

Julian Landaw et al.

Summary: This study conducted computer simulations on five ventricular action potential models and found that the transient outward potassium current (I-to) plays a key role in promoting spiral wave breakup. The absence of I-to can prevent spiral wave breakup, but increasing its maximum conductance can promote it. This observation has implications for understanding spiral wave dynamics in real hearts and improving action potential models.

Drift and termination of spiral waves in optogenetically modified cardiac tissue at sub-threshold illumination

Sayedeh Hussaini et al.

Summary: The study on the effects of sub-threshold illumination on controlling cardiac spiral waves reveals that an increase in light intensity leads to higher cellular resting membrane potentials, resulting in spatial voltage gradients and influencing the drift direction of the spiral wave. These gradients can be strategically utilized to terminate the spiral wave.

Chimeras

Fatemeh Parastesh et al.

Summary: Chimeras, observed in both biological and physical systems, represent an important new paradigm of nonlinear dynamics. They have been linked to various phenomena such as uni-hemispheric sleep in animals, power grid outages, and optomechanics. Future research opportunities and challenges in understanding chimeras are outlined.

Termination of a pinned spiral wave by the wave train with a free defect

Guoyong Yuan et al.

Summary: The study utilizes numerical simulation with the FHN model to successfully eliminate pinned spiral waves in cardiac tissue by applying periodic perturbations near the boundary. It is suggested that termination of pinned spirals may be successful when obstacle size is small and perturbation period is limited. Additionally, pinned spiral waves can also be coincidentally eliminated for specific parameter values outside the area.

Spiral wave chimera-like transient dynamics in three-dimensional grid of diffusive ecological systems

Bidesh K. Bera et al.

Summary: This article explores the emergence and existence of spiral wave chimera-like transient patterns in coupled ecological systems, as well as the transition scenarios between transient patterns and long-term behaviors. The study finds that the transition from transient patterns to long-term synchronized or desynchronized patterns occurs through the deformation of the incoherent region of the spiral core.

Repulsive inter-layer coupling induces anti-phase synchronization

Igor A. Shepelev et al.

Summary: In a bilayer network of van der Pol oscillators with repulsive coupling, anti-phase synchronization of spatiotemporal structures was observed for all considered combinations of intra-layer coupling. The correlation coefficient between symmetrical pairs of network nodes tended to be close to -1 in the case of anti-phase synchronization. The form of synchronous structures depended on the intra-layer coupling strengths, which varied with the repulsive inter-layer coupling.

Size matters: Effects of the size of heterogeneity on the wave re-entry and spiral wave formation in an excitable media

Karthikeyan Rajagopal et al.

Summary: The network performance of neurons is crucial in determining the behavior of physiological systems. In this study, we investigated the impact of obstacles on wave re-entry and spiral wave formation in a network of neurons. Our findings suggest that the size of obstacles plays a key role in determining spiral wave formation, with horizontally placed obstacles having a smaller impact on wave re-entry compared to vertically placed obstacles.

Moving spiral wave chimeras

Martin Bataille-Gonzalez et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the bound states of two counter-rotating spiral chimeras in a two-dimensional array of heterogeneous nonlocally coupled phase oscillators on a flat torus. Unlike other known spiral chimeras, these two-core spiral chimeras typically exhibit drift motion and develop specific fingerprint patterns of varying synchrony levels. Numerical analysis of the Ott-Antonsen equation reveals the stability regions of different spiral chimeras, which are classified into three main categories: symmetric, asymmetric, and meandering spiral chimeras.
