Parkinson's disease and oral health: A systematic review

Merel C. Verhoeff et al.

Summary: Oral health in patients with Parkinson's Disease (PD) is negatively affected by motor and non-motor symptoms, as well as medication use. This systematic review found that PD patients have poorer oral health compared to healthy individuals and this is associated with disease duration, severity, and medication use. Regular appointments with oral health care professionals, with a focus on prevention, are advised for PD patients.

Chloro-aluminum phthalocyanine-mediated photodynamic therapy in the treatment of stage-II chronic periodontitis among smokers

Abdulaziz A. Al-Kheraif et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of chloro-aluminum phthalocyanine-mediated photodynamic therapy (PDT) as an adjunct to dental scaling (DS) on clinical periodontal, bacterial, and immunological outcomes in smokers and non-smokers with stage-II chronic periodontitis. The results showed that PDT + DS and DS alone significantly improved bleeding on probing, probing depth, and clinical attachment loss, and PDT + DS significantly reduced the counts of specific bacteria in smokers. Additionally, PDT + DS significantly reduced interleukin-1 levels in non-smokers at 6 months. In conclusion, chloro-aluminum phthalocyanine-mediated PDT has positive effects on the outcomes of non-surgical periodontal therapy in chronic periodontitis patients.

Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy using chloro-aluminum phthalocyanine for treating advanced stage-III periodontitis in smoking patients

Abdulaziz A. Al-Kheraif et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the bacterial, clinical, and cytokine profile of adjunctive photodynamic therapy using chloro-aluminum phthalocyanine (CAP/aPDT) with root surface debridement (RSD) versus RSD alone in cigarette smokers and never-smokers with stage-III periodontitis. The results showed that CAP/aPDT+RSD decreased bleeding on probing in smokers and significantly reduced probing depth and clinical attachment loss in both groups. Porphyromonas gingivalis and Tannerella forsythia remained elevated in smokers, but CAP/aPDT+RSD significantly decreased their levels at 3- and 6-month follow-up. CAP/aPDT+RSD also showed decreased interleukin-6 levels in never-smokers. Overall, CAP-mediated aPDT along with nonsurgical periodontal therapy improved the bacteriological outcomes among smokers and never-smokers with stage-III periodontitis.

Summary: Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative condition with diverse causes and clinical presentations. Diagnosis is clinically based, and treatment goals vary from person to person, emphasizing the need for personalized management. Currently, there is no therapy to slow down or arrest the progression of Parkinson's disease.

Photodynamic Therapy-An Up-to-Date Review

Adelina-Gabriela Niculescu et al.

Summary: The healing power of light has attracted interest for thousands of years, resulting in the emergence of photodynamic therapy as a promising approach in treating various diseases. However, classic photosensitizing compounds have limitations in clinical applications, which nanotechnology aims to overcome by improving targeting efficiency, release control, and solubility.

Longitudinal evaluation of clinical, spectral and tissue degradation biomarkers in progression of periodontitis among cigarette and electronic cigarette smokers

Summary: The study showed that cigarette smokers had higher deterioration of periodontal health compared to e-cigarette smokers. Smoking, MMP-8, and CTX were identified as prognostic factors for clinical attachment loss in both cigarette and e-cigarette smokers.

Oral Health Disorders in Parkinson's Disease: More than Meets the Eye

Manon Auffret et al.

Summary: Oral health issues in Parkinson's disease patients are often overlooked despite their close relationship with overall health. Interdisciplinary cooperation is necessary for implementing prevention, management, and follow-up strategies to maintain and improve the overall comfort of patients. It is important to address these issues to prevent further complications and improve quality of life for PD patients.
