School-based preventive chemotherapy program for schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminth control in Angola: 6-year impact assessment

Summary: A school PC program for STHs and schistosomiasis has been implemented in Huambo, Uige, and Zaire provinces, Angola since 2013 and 2014. The first impact assessment conducted in 2021 showed limited reduction in the prevalence of schistosomiasis and STHs across the three provinces.

Burden and factors associated with schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminth infections among school-age children in Huambo, Uige and Zaire provinces, Angola

Summary: This study reports the prevalence, intensity and risk factors for schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) in Angola. The results show that most municipalities meet the prevalence thresholds for a schistosomiasis preventive chemotherapy program, and STH preventive chemotherapy is recommended for nearly all municipalities in Uige and select municipalities in Huambo and Zaire. The study also highlights the association between ecological zone, ethnicity, and the risk of schistosomiasis and STH infection, suggesting the need for further evaluation and targeted control strategies.

Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices on Urinary Schistosomiasis among Primary Schoolchildren in Nelson Mandela Bay, South Africa

Summary: Schistosomiasis remains a public health concern in South Africa, particularly among schoolchildren under the age of 15. This study assessed primary schoolchildren in Grades 4-7 and found poor overall knowledge and attitudes towards schistosomiasis. A significant gender-related difference in practices was also observed, highlighting the need for targeted control programmes.
