The discovery of TiO2-II, the α-PbO2-structured high-pressure polymorph of rutile, in the Suizhou L6 chondrite

Xiande Xie et al.

Summary: We have discovered TiO2-II in the unmelted rock of the shocked Suizhou L6 chondrite. Our investigation showed that TiO2-II particles are related to ilmenite and pyrophanite, occurring as needle- and leaf-shaped inclusions in ilmenite and patch-, tape-shaped body in pyrophanite. The composition and Raman spectrum of TiO2-II are consistent with its precursor rutile, and it mainly exists as well-ordered nano-domains with small mis-orientation. The P-T regime estimated for the Suizhou unmelted rock suggests that the phase transition of rutile to TiO2-II can occur.

Atomistic insight into the ferroelastic post-stishovite transition by high-pressure single-crystal X-ray diffraction

Yanyao Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the structural changes of stishovite crystals under high pressure conditions were revealed using synchrotron single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The results show that at a pressure of 51.4 GPa, splitting of O coordinates, crossover of Si-O bond lengths, and rotation of SiO6 octahedra occur. These findings are significant for understanding ferroelastic phase transitions.

CO2 laser heating system for in situ radial x-ray absorption at 16-BM-D at the Advanced Photon Source

Christian Childs et al.

Summary: In this paper, we present a portable CO2 laser heating system for in situ x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) studies. Back scattering optical measurements are enabled by implementing a Ge beamsplitter and temperature measurements are free of chromatic aberration due to the implementation of the peak-scaling method and mode scrambling of the input signal. Laser power stabilization is achieved using electronic feedback, providing a steady power crucial for longer XAS collections.

Prevalence of pretransition disordering in the rutile-to-CaCl2 phase transition of GeO2

G. Alexander Smith et al.

Summary: The study confirms the anomalous behavior of GeO2 during the rutile to CaCl2 phase transition, with density functional theory calculations showing a decrease in enthalpic barrier to oxygen displacements with increasing pressure, leading to the formation of small polarons in the distorted state band structure.
