Sjogren's syndrome: a systemic autoimmune disease

Simone Negrini et al.

Summary: Sjogren's syndrome is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by dryness in the eyes and mouth, with systemic manifestations and unclear pathogenesis. Diagnosis is based on clinical symptoms and specific tests, while treatment ranges from local to systemic medications. New classification criteria and disease activity scores have been developed for research and clinical practice.

Treatment of Sjogren's syndrome: current therapy and future directions

Robert I. Fox et al.

Summary: SS is characterized by severe fatigue, dryness, pain, glandular swelling, and various systemic manifestations. Clinical trials have failed due to lack of extraglandular symptoms in enrolled patients. Future therapies should focus on improving symptoms and exploring innovative treatment directions.

Traditional Chinese medicine is a useful and promising alternative strategy for treatment of Sjogren's syndrome: A review

Shu-jun Wei et al.

Summary: Primary Sjogren's syndrome is a chronic autoimmune disease involving exocrine glands, and traditional Chinese medicines have been investigated for their treatment effects on this syndrome. These medicines are used in various ways, such as upregulation of aquaporin proteins, suppression of cell apoptosis, and suppression of abnormal activation of T and B lymphocytes. However, more research is needed on the active constituents, quality control, pharmacokinetics, toxicity, and modern preparations of these traditional Chinese medicines.

Mortality in patients with primary Sjogren's syndrome: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Hong Huang et al.

Summary: The study found a 46% increased risk of death among pSS patients compared to the general population. Mortality risks were higher in European countries, in retrospective studies, in studies based on referral cohorts, in studies with more than 500 patients, and in studies with follow-up time longer than 8 years. Patients with older age, male gender, vasculitis, interstitial lung disease, low complements, positive anti-La/SSB, and cryoglobulinaemia had significantly greater mortality risk.

Integrated Bioinformatics and Validation Reveal Potential Biomarkers Associated With Progression of Primary Sjogren's Syndrome

Ning Li et al.

Summary: Using transcriptome sequencing and bioinformatics analysis, this study identified 28 upregulated differentially expressed genes in pSS patients, mainly involved in immune-related and infection-related pathways. Morphological features of minor salivary glands changed significantly with pSS disease progression, including lymphocytic infiltrates, acinar atrophy, and nuclear shrinkage. Selected hub genes based on these DEGs were correlated with T follicular helper cells, memory B cells, and M1 macrophages.

Biological Therapy in Primary Sjogren's Syndrome: Effect on Salivary Gland Function and Inflammation

Summary: Primary Sjogren's syndrome is a chronic autoimmune disease affecting salivary and lachrymal glands, causing dry mouth and eyes symptoms. There is currently no disease-modifying drug approved for treatment, with therapies focused on symptom relief. Management of oral dryness remains a significant unmet clinical need for patients with pSS.
