Chitinase is a Potent Insecticidal Molecular Target of Camptothecin and Its Derivatives

Yi Ding et al.

Summary: In this study, CPT and its derivatives were found to be competitive inhibitors of insect chitinases, playing a key role in insect chitinolytic system. CPT showed high inhibitory activity against Ostrinia furnacalis chitinase, while SN-38 exhibited higher inhibitory activity overall. This study provides a new molecular target and design insights for CPT-based insecticides.

Mutual repression between JNK/AP-1 and JAK/STAT stratifies senescent and proliferative cell behaviors during tissue regeneration

Janhvi Jaiswal et al.

Summary: Epithelial repair relies on stress signaling pathways, and their deregulation is related to chronic wound and cancer pathologies. The study reveals a regulatory network between JNK/AP-1 and JAK/STAT, which is essential for spatial stratification and proper tissue repair. This network has important implications for tissue repair, chronic wound pathologies, and tumor microenvironments.

Rotenone encapsulated in pH-responsive alginate-based microspheres reduces toxicity to zebrafish

Zixia Song et al.

Summary: pH-responsive alginate-based microspheres were synthesized to encapsulate rotenone for pest control. The microspheres showed responses to solution pH levels, allowing controlled release of rotenone at different pH values. The toxicity of rotenone beads to zebrafish and fish embryos was found to be 2-and 4-fold lower than chemical rotenone.

Transcriptome analysis of emamectin benzoate caused midgut damage by inducing oxidative stress, energy metabolism disorder and apoptosis in gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar)

Zhe Xu et al.

Summary: Our study revealed that EMB induces midgut damage in gypsy moth through oxidative stress, energy metabolism disorder, and apoptosis. Transcriptomic analysis identified significant differential expression of genes related to these processes. EMB was found to increase ROS levels, inhibit antioxidant enzymes, disrupt energy metabolism, and activate the mitochondrial apoptosis pathway, ultimately causing midgut injury.

Presence of pesticides in the environment, transition into organic food, and implications for quality assurance along the European organic food chain-A review

Mirjam Schleiffer et al.

Summary: The use of synthetic pesticides is not allowed in organic production, but traces of synthetic pesticides are regularly detected in organic food. This review focuses on the pathways of unintentional and technically unavoidable contamination of organic food with synthetic pesticides in Europe. It shows that synthetic pesticides are widely present in the environment and can enter the food chain. Organic operators can take measures to reduce contamination risks, but a certain level of pesticide contamination is technically unavoidable. Case-by-case investigation is needed to determine the origin of pesticide residues and the likelihood of unavoidable contamination and fraud. Overall, determining the presence of pesticide residues in organic food remains a challenge for organic certification bodies and control authorities.

Benshui Shu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the bioactive secondary metabolite Camptothecin (CPT) from Camptotheca acuminata has adverse effects on the fat bodies of Spodoptera frugiperda larvae. Transcriptomic analysis revealed differential gene expression in pathways related to detoxification, immune response, fatty acids, chitin, and hormone biosynthesis in fat bodies after exposure to CPT. These findings contribute to understanding the mechanism of CPT toxicity against S. frugiperda.
