Antifungal activity of bacterial strains from maize silks against Fusarium verticillioides

Gisele de Fatima Dias Diniz et al.

Summary: Endophytic and epiphytic bacteria isolated from maize silks show significant antifungal activity against Fusarium verticillioides. These strains produce enzymes with antifungal activity and can reduce fungal development in stored grains and stalk rot severity.

Bacterial motility: machinery and mechanisms

Navish Wadhwa et al.

Summary: Bacteria have developed different mechanisms for motility to utilize resources and environments. They can swim in aqueous media through rotation of helical filaments, or move over solid surfaces using various mechanisms such as twitching, gliding, and sliding. Recent technological advances have improved our understanding of the molecular machinery behind bacterial motility.

Molecular characterization of indigenous microbes and its potential as a biological control agent of Fusarium stem rot disease (Fusarium verticillioides) on maize

Hishar Mirsam et al.

Summary: Fusarium stem rot disease caused by Fusarium verticillioides is a serious issue for Indonesian farmers. Using indigenous microbes as an eco-friendly alternative to synthetic fungicides for disease control was studied. The molecular characteristics and effectiveness of an indigenous microbial consortium in controlling the disease were examined. A bacterial consortium consisting of Bacillus cereus, Trichoderma asperellum, and Penicillium raperi showed the highest effectiveness in controlling Fusarium verticillioides and has the potential to be developed into a biopesticide product.

Endophytic bacteria derived from the desert-spurge (Euphorbia antiquorum L.) suppress Fusarium verticillioides, the causative agent of maize ear and root rot

Vanessa Nya Dinango et al.

Summary: Fungal plant pathology, especially Fusarium verticillioides, poses a significant threat to maize production. This study investigated the antagonistic potential of 27 endophytic bacteria against F. verticillioides causing ear and root rot disease in maize. In vitro screening revealed that certain bacteria restricted fungal growth directly or via the production of volatile organic compounds. These bacteria also produced extracellular enzymes and plant growth-promoting factors. In a greenhouse experiment, Citrobacter fruendii LPR4(+) exhibited the best protective effect against F. verticillioides, leading to improved root and shoot development.

Plant growth-promoting bacterial endophytes as biocontrol agents of pre- and post-harvest diseases: Fundamentals, methods of application and future perspectives

Luzmaria R. Morales-Cedeno et al.

Summary: Bacterial endophytes play a crucial role in sustainable agriculture by protecting plants from pathogens, promoting plant growth, and reducing the reliance on toxic agrochemicals. Various strategies can be employed to utilize endophytic bacteria as biological agents during both pre- and post-harvest stages to safeguard crop plants and their agricultural products.

Research Progress on Fumonisin B1 Contamination and Toxicity: A Review

Jia Chen et al.

Summary: Fumonisin B1 (FB1) is a highly toxic mycotoxin produced mainly by Fusarium proliferatum and Fusarium verticillioide, causing extensive contamination worldwide in corn, rice, wheat, and their products. It poses health risks and toxicity to animals and humans, inducing oxidative stress, endoplasmic reticulum stress, cellular autophagy, and apoptosis. The review focuses on FB1 contamination, its toxic effects, and potential mechanisms, aiming to provide a reliable reference for understanding FB1 occurrence and toxicity.

Direct Antibiotic Activity of Bacillibactin Broadens the Biocontrol Range of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens MBI600

Anastasia Dimopoulou et al.

Summary: Bacillus amyloliquefaciens produces the catecholate siderophore bacillibactin, which exhibits antibiotic activity against nonsusceptible bacterial and fungal phytopathogens, enhancing its antifungal activity. Iron starvation leads to upregulation of specific genes involved in microbial fitness and competition, improving the competitiveness of the biocontrol agent. This study suggests that bacillibactin biosynthesis is coregulated with the transcription of antimicrobial metabolite synthases and fitness regulatory genes, which can be utilized to enhance the effectiveness and broaden the range of existing bacterial biocontrol agents through rational modification of growth conditions.
