Optimization and field evaluation of sex-pheromone of potato tuber moth, Phthorimaea operculella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae)

Junjie Yan et al.

Summary: The study compared the sex pheromone titers released by Phthorimaea operculella females and the electroantennogram (EAG) responses of male antennae to pheromone compounds. The optimal sex pheromone ratio was screened in the field, with different ratios found to be most attractive to males in tobacco and potato fields. Mass trapping using sex pheromones effectively reduced the population of Phthorimaea operculella in the potato and tobacco fields over two years.

Optimization of a pheromone lure by analyzing the peripheral coding of sex pheromones of Spodoptera frugiperda in China

Chan Wang et al.

Summary: The sex pheromones of the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda, show differences in composition and proportions in different geographical populations, but always contain Z9-14:OAc as the major component. The study identified seven components from pheromone gland extracts of female S. frugiperda in the Yunnan population from China. Z9-14:OAc, Z7-12:OAc, and Z11-16:OAc were identified as the male antennal active components, with a ternary combination of Z9-14:OAc, Z7-12:OAc, and Z11-16:OAc at a ratio of 88:1:11 showing the strongest attractiveness to males in wind tunnel and field tests.

Optimization and field demonstration of theLygus pratensis(Hemiptera: Miridae) sex pheromone

Tao Zhang et al.

Summary: The plant bug Lygus pratensis is a polyphagous herbivore that often reaches outbreak population levels on cotton in northwestern China. The sex pheromone of L. pratensis strains from this region has been identified and optimized, with a 20:1:30 ratio blend being the most attractive to males in field trials. Traps baited with this synthetic pheromone blend offer advantages for population monitoring and can be easily incorporated into integrated pest management programs.

Latest Developments in Insect Sex Pheromone Research and Its Application in Agricultural Pest Management

Syed Arif Hussain Rizvi et al.

Summary: Insect pheromones, particularly sex pheromones, have been highly successful in controlling low density pest populations and reducing pest populations with minimal impact on their natural enemies. Mass trapping and mating disruption strategies using sex pheromones have significantly decreased the use of conventional insecticides, providing sustainable and eco-friendly pest management in agricultural crops. Recent interdisciplinary research has greatly advanced our understanding of pheromone perception mechanisms and their practical applications in agricultural pest management.
