Physiochemical responses of Ailanthus altissima under the challenge of Verticillium dahliae: elucidating the decline of one of the world's worst invasive alien plant species

Claudia Pisuttu et al.

Summary: Natural infections of Verticillium spp. on Ailanthus altissima suggest the potential use of biological control to combat this invasive plant. In this study, the ecophysiological and biochemical responses of artificially inoculated Ailanthus trees were investigated. The fungal infection led to severe leaf defoliation, impaired water status, compromised photosynthesis, and altered nutrient translocations.

Crop-specific effectiveness of birds as agents of pest control

Samuel J. Mayne et al.

Summary: Ecosystem services provided by natural enemies of pests can increase crop yield in low intensity agricultural systems. However, the effectiveness of these services varies, and trade-offs may exist between harmful and beneficial species. This study found that the presence of birds reduced pest numbers on brassica and cucurbit crops but may consume other natural enemies on solanaceous crops, highlighting the potential for enhancing biological control by enhancing bird communities near certain crops.

A review of the impacts of air pollution on terrestrial birds

Madeleine G. Barton et al.

Summary: Air pollution has various impacts on ecosystem functioning, including soil and water acidification and eutrophication, heavy metal deposition, and direct or indirect effects on flora and fauna. Assessing the impacts on organisms in the field is challenging due to variable exposure levels and nuanced species responses. However, due to its significant effects on human and ecosystem health, the impacts of air pollution on species are expected to be substantial.

Ambient ozone-New threat to birds in mountain ecosystems?

Jiri Reif et al.

Summary: Mountain ecosystems are at risk from various pressures, including climate change, human disturbance, land abandonment, and air pollution. Birds, as model organisms, are used to study these pressures due to their diversity and position in the food chains. Ozone (O3) pollution, one of the most important air pollutants in mountain conditions, has a negative impact on bird populations, especially at higher altitudes. This study analyzes the effects of O3 concentration on bird populations in the Giant Mountains, Czechia, and provides insights into the mechanistic understanding of O3 impacts on animal populations in nature.

Postharvest Ozone Fumigation of Grapes (cv Sangiovese) Differently Affects Volatile Organic Compounds and Polyphenol Profiles of Berries and Wine

Margherita Modesti et al.

Summary: Consumers' growing demand for safer food and beverages has led the wine sector to seek alternatives to sulfur dioxide. Ozone has been used in the wine industry to produce sulfur dioxide-free wines. A two-year study found that postharvest ozone treatment of grapes had positive effects on polyphenol content and the expression of specific genes related to polyphenol biosynthesis. The wine obtained from ozone-treated grapes also had higher flavanol content.

Ozone pollution threatens bird populations to collapse: an imminent ecological threat?

Evgenios Agathokleous et al.

Summary: While the decline in bird populations is happening, the reasons for this decline remain uncertain. Laboratory experiments have shown that air pollution is a known factor that causes oxidative stress and negatively affects bird health. Recent epidemiological studies have reported significant declines in avian populations in Central Europe and the United States due to air pollution, specifically ozone. Urgent actions are necessary to mitigate these effects, which pose threats to biodiversity and environmental health. Proposed measures can guide efforts in mitigating the impact of air pollution on avian populations.

Ambient ozone at a rural Central European site and its vertical concentration gradient close to the ground

Iva Hunova et al.

Summary: This study aims to explore the vertical distribution of ground-level ozone concentrations and examine the O-3 concentration gradients at different heights. Daily mean O-3 concentrations measured at the Kosetice station during 2015-2021 are analyzed using the GAM approach. The study finds significant variations in the O-3 concentration gradients at different height ranges, with the highest dynamics observed between 2 and 8 meters and differences in seasonal and annual aspects.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of O3 on grapevine and determined the critical levels for yield loss and O3-induced foliar injury. The results showed that O3 exposure had a cumulative effect on the grapevine and that the response increased with increasing O3 level. The study provides consistent and comparable results for O3 risk assessment in grapevine cultivation.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of long-term ozone exposure on the yield, quality, and nutraceutical properties of Vaccinium myrtillus plants. The results showed that ozone exposure induced oxidative stress, membrane denaturation, and altered biomass allocation, leading to accelerated fruit maturation.

Bridging experimental and monitoring research for visible foliar injury as bio-indicator of ozone impacts on forests

Barbara Baesso Moura et al.

Summary: This study compared O-3-like VFI registered in southern European forest sites with actual O-3 VFI observed in a FO3X experiment. The imaging analysis showed that the colors were similar between field observations and the FO3X. The study established a flux-based threshold for O-3 VFI onset but found that it only partially explained the observations in actual forests for certain tree species. The importance of continuous monitoring activities and the presence of various species in mitigating O-3 VFI were suggested.

Using camera-trapping to assess grape consumption by vertebrate pests in a World Heritage vineyard region

Lucas Lamelas-Lopez et al.

Summary: The study showed that camera-trapping is valuable in identifying and understanding vineyard pests, including their behavior, activity patterns, and consumption rates. Results from Terceira Island revealed that the Madeira lizard, house sparrow, and Azores blackbird were the most frequent grape pests, with specific activity patterns throughout the day. It also provided evidence that targeting the endemic Azores woodpigeon and the common pigeon should be avoided by farmers on the island.

Assessment of tropospheric ozone phytotoxic effects on the grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.): A review

D. Blanco-Ward et al.

Summary: Grapes, as a significant crop with great economic and cultural value globally, may suffer from reduced yield and quality due to exposure to high levels of tropospheric ozone, especially in Mediterranean environments. There is a lack of comprehensive risk assessment database and shared experimental protocols to establish grapevine-specific O-3 relationships and critical levels.

Risk factors and strategies for integrated management of bird pests affecting maize establishment

Lorenzo Furlan et al.

Summary: The study identified corvids as the main culprits of damage to maize fields in northeastern Italy. The presence of nearby roosting areas with trees higher than 7 meters increased the risk of bird damage fivefold. No-tillage soil management was associated with a higher risk of bird damage, while naturally derived bird repellents in seed coatings decreased the risk of damage to maize by birds.

Despite impacts on photosynthesis, most growth parameters were not affected by O-3 exposure.

The wild boar Sus scrofa as a threat to ground-nesting bird species: an artificial nest experiment

E. Mori et al.

Summary: Nest predation is a major cause of reproductive failure for ground-nesting bird species in Europe, with wild boars identified as a significant predator. An experiment conducted in Mediterranean habitats of central Italy found that wild boars were the most common predators of ground-nesting bird nests, followed by magpies, red foxes, and pine martens. The study also revealed that the presence of wild boars increased the likelihood of nest predation, highlighting the potential threat of their population increase to European ground-nesting bird species.
