Summary: Defining neonatal encephalopathy clinically is challenging for therapeutic hypothermia qualification. This study evaluates magnetic resonance imaging outcomes of 39 infants with mild encephalopathy who did not meet cooling criteria. Infants evaluated for therapeutic hypothermia are at risk for brain injury and may benefit from neuroimaging and follow-up.

Summary: There are over 7,000 individually rare diseases that collectively affect millions of people globally. Neurologic single-gene disorders are particularly common among them. Recent advancements in recombinant adeno-associated virus vectors have paved the way for gene therapies for rare neurologic diseases, including FDA-approved treatments for inherited retinal dystrophy and spinal muscular atrophy. Further development of gene editing technologies holds the promise of expanding innovative therapies to benefit more patients with these disorders.

Placental contribution to neonatal encephalopathy

Summary: Placental assessment is crucial in understanding the pathogenesis of Neonatal Encephalopathy, particularly in relation to placental dysfunction. Maternal and fetal factors affecting specific placental pathologies need to be taken into consideration, and comprehensive evaluations of the placenta across trimesters and after delivery are essential. Advanced prenatal molecular and imaging assessments of placenta, combined with placental histopathological examination methods, should be used in large representative population studies to further define the links between placental dysfunction and Neonatal Encephalopathy.
