Incidence rates, emerging serotypes and genotypes, and antimicrobial susceptibility of pneumococcal disease in Taiwan: A multi-center clinical microbiological study after PCV13 implementation

Chih-Ho Chen et al.

Summary: The multi-center clinical microbiological study in Taiwan aimed to evaluate the impact of childhood PCV13 immunization on pneumococcal disease, and the magnitude of serotype replacement in invasive and non-invasive pneumococcal disease among all age groups. The study found that childhood PCV13 immunization exerted an indirect protection to vaccine serotype clinically defined non-bacteremic pneumococcal pneumonia among adults, especially those between 50 and 64 years of age. Emerging non-PCV13 serotypes mainly caused non-invasive mucosal disease among children.

Summary: The introduction of PCV significantly reduced the prevalence of S. pneumoniae and H. influenzae in children with respiratory tract infection, potentially due to a positive association between PCV serotypes and H. influenzae.

Impact of PCV-13 vaccine on invasive pneumococcal disease in hospitalis children: A multi-institutional analysis

Summary: This study analyzed changes in invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) hospitalizations before and after the introduction of the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) using data from the Pediatric Health Information System (PHIS) database. The results showed a significant decrease in IPD incidence among healthy children, but no significant change among those with chronic conditions. Further research is needed to understand factors contributing to persistent IPD hospitalizations.
