Biologic Therapies for Severe Asthma

Guy G. Brusselle et al.

Summary: Biologic therapies may be necessary to reduce the disease burden and risks for severe asthma patients. This review discusses the mechanisms, efficacy, and safety of biologics for severe asthma.

What is the added value of FeNO as T2 biomarker?

Maria Celeste Marcos et al.

Summary: Nitric oxide plays an important role in type 2 immune response, and exhaled nitric oxide increases in patients with asthma. Comparatively, exhaled nitric oxide has advantages such as non-invasiveness, easy repeatability, and relevance in measuring T2 inflammation and predicting response to inhaled corticosteroids. However, it may not be sufficient as a single parameter for initial asthma diagnosis, and its utility should be considered along with other tests.

Assessment of adherence to corticosteroids in asthma by drug monitoring or fractional exhaled nitric oxide: A literature review

Fahad Alahmadi et al.

Summary: Although corticosteroid treatment is effective in controlling asthma, poor adherence undermines its efficacy. Studies have used blood prednisolone levels and FeNO as markers for adherence to oral and inhaled corticosteroids, but further research is needed to assess the impact of dose and timing on blood levels and explore FeNO suppression testing in prospective studies.

Workup of Severe Asthma

Simon Couillard et al.

Summary: This article reviews the clinical assessment of a 56-year-old man with difficult-to-control asthma and a history of exacerbations, highlighting the importance of identifying different asthma phenotypes and using biomarkers to guide treatment decisions. The patient was found to have severe asthma with ICS-resistant type 2 airway inflammation, and additional treatment options will be considered in the future.

Serum Inhaled Corticosteroid Detection for Monitoring Adherence in Severe Asthma

Fahad H. Alahmadi et al.

Summary: LC-MS/MS can reliably detect commonly used ICSs in the blood at least 8 hours after dosing, providing a measure of adherence in severe asthma patients. Lower blood levels were associated with higher exacerbation rates and poorer lung function.
