The impact of misinformation on the COVID-19 pandemic

Summary: COVID-19 related misinformation has played a negatively influential role in controlling the situation since the beginning of the pandemic. The widespread availability and dissemination of misinformation through the internet, social media, and other communication outlets have led to beliefs that result in vaccine avoidance, mask refusal, and the use of medications with insufficient scientific evidence, contributing to increased disease burden. Misinformation has become a global challenge and burden on individual health, public health, and governments. This review article aims to summarize the role of media and other information outlets in the pandemic, increase awareness of the negative impact of misinformation, and provide recommendations to alleviate this burden.

Factors underlying COVID-19 vaccine and booster hesitancy and refusal, and incentivizing vaccine adoption

Summary: This paper investigates the factors underlying vaccine hesitancy in the US and the efficacy of different incentives or disincentives to increase vaccine uptake. The study found that lack of trust in government or vaccine efficacy was associated with higher levels of hesitancy and refusal. On the other hand, individuals who typically get a flu vaccine were less likely to be hesitant or refuse the COVID-19 vaccine. Monetary rewards were not effective in increasing vaccination rates, while the prospect of job loss or higher health insurance premiums significantly increased vaccine uptake.

What Works in Implementing Patient Decision Aids in Routine Clinical Settings? A Rapid Realist Review and Update from the International Patient Decision Aid Standards Collaboration

Summary: This study used rapid realist review methodology to develop 8 refined theories explaining why and how PtDAs can be successfully implemented in routine healthcare settings. Recommended implementation strategies include co-production, team training, patient engagement, senior-level buy-in, and measuring for improvement. Organizations and individuals can use these key strategies as a practical guide for embedding PtDAs routinely. Further research is needed to understand the role of context in the success of different implementation studies.

Feasibility of Rapidly Developing and Widely Disseminating Patient Decision Aids to Respond to Urgent Decisional Needs due to the COVID-19 Pandemic

Summary: The interdisciplinary stakeholder team developed and disseminated patient decision aids (PtDAs) rapidly to meet urgent decisional needs of retirement/nursing home residents and their families during the COVID-19 pandemic. Through identifying urgent decisional needs, developing PtDAs, obtaining stakeholder feedback, and broadly disseminating the tools, the team showed feasible rapid development and wide dissemination of PtDAs. The PtDAs were downloaded 10,000 times within 3 weeks of dissemination and received positive user feedback, demonstrating the effectiveness of the approach in responding to urgent decisional needs.

Effectiveness of patient decision aids for total hip and knee arthroplasty decision-making: a systematic review

Summary: A systematic review found that patient decision aids (PtDAs) improved decision quality and quality of the decision-making process for adults with hip and knee osteoarthritis considering primary elective total joint arthroplasty when compared to usual care. PtDAs also increased surgeon satisfaction within the consultation, but did not significantly affect patient satisfaction or uptake of the chosen option.

Summary: We updated the definitions, theoretical rationale, and evidence for guidance and decision coaching within or alongside PtDAs. While no RCTs on guidance in PtDAs were found, 21 RCTs on decision coaching showed that it can improve patient knowledge but had variable effects on other outcomes. The decision coaching definition was updated with minimal elements.

Developers can increase information balance in PtDAs by using the IPDAS checklist to adjust their structure and design elements.
