Experimental and numerical study on ignition and combustion characteristics of boron-magnesium composite powders

Shuyuan Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, a high-pressure laser ignition and combustion system with adjustable oxidizer gas atmosphere was established to investigate the ignition and combustion characteristics of boron-magnesium (BM) composite powders. An ignition and combustion model of BM powders was established and validated. The results showed that the water content, O2 content, and Mg content affected the ignition delay time of BM powders. The combustion time was also influenced by the Mg content, ambient pressure, water content, and O2 content. A trade-off between ignition and combustion performance of BM composite powders was observed.

Synthesis and Characterization of Magnesium/Boron Solid Solutions for Energetic Applications

Prawal P. K. Agarwal et al.

Summary: Reducing the thickness of the native oxide layer is crucial in enhancing the reactivity and heat release during the oxidation of boron particles. This can be achieved by adding Mg, which undergoes an exothermic redox reaction to reduce the native oxide and enrich metallic boron. The synthesized Mg/B solid solutions exhibit a core-shell structure, prolonging the shelf life and promoting heat release, making them promising as energetic materials.

Effect of particle morphology on reactivity, ignition and combustion of boron powders

Mehnaz Mursalat et al.

Summary: Spherical boron powders were prepared by ball milling and their combustion performance was compared with irregularly-shaped milled and commercial powders. The results showed that ball milling shifted the onset of boron oxidation to lower temperatures and finer spherical powders exhibited higher initial oxidation rates and combustion activity.

Boron-based composite energetic materials (B-CEMs): Preparation, combustion and applications

Wei-Qiang Pang et al.

Summary: Metal fuels with high energy densities are attractive for solid/hybrid rocket propulsion and energy-conversion applications. Boron powder is an ideal fuel candidate due to its high gravimetric and volumetric heats of combustion. However, amorphous boron has drawbacks of high ignition temperatures and incomplete combustion. Thus, there is growing interest in using boron-based composite energetic materials. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the preparation, combustion, and applications of boron-based composite energetic materials, and discusses the future challenges in the field.

Experimental study on aluminum particles combustion in a turbulent jet

Jiarui Zhang et al.

Summary: Experimental investigation was conducted on the aluminum particles turbulent jet flame in this study. The results showed that aluminum particles need to be heated within a certain distance to ignite, and the flame structure can be divided into preheating zone, flame zone, and burnout zone. Increasing the oxidizing ability can significantly improve the flame temperature and reduce the lift-off height and visible length of the flame.
