Summary: This study investigated the seroprevalence and risk factors of canine leishmaniosis in Portugal. The true seroprevalence was found to be 12.5%, and age over 2 years, residing in the interior regions of the country, and non-use of repellents were identified as potential risk factors. The key to controlling this disease lies in continuous implementation of prophylactic measures.

Summary: This study assessed the knowledge, attitude, and preventive measures of Wegeltena secondary school students towards cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) in Delanta district, Northeast Ethiopia. The study found that the participants had poor knowledge and unfavorable attitude towards the disease. Level of education and residence were determinants of knowledge about CL, while sex and level of knowledge about CL were determinants of attitude towards the disease.

Summary: The study investigated perceptions and behaviors related to cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) in different societies, revealing the existence of positive and negative categories of beliefs and behaviors. In most endemic regions, misconceptions are likely the main cause of various misbehaviors when dealing with CL. Providing educational programs to strengthen positive beliefs and correct negative beliefs may be useful in improving relevant behaviors for the prevention and control of CL.

Changes in the microbiological diagnosis and epidemiology of cutaneous leishmaniasis in real-time PCR era: A six-year experience in a referral center in Barcelona

Summary: Leishmaniasis, caused by various species of the genus Leishmania, is a neglected disease prevalent in tropical and subtropical areas, including the Mediterranean basin. In Spain, the only endemic species is L. (L) infantum, but imported cases are also diagnosed. Real-time PCR is an effective tool for diagnosis and molecular epidemiology of the disease. The study shows an increase in both autochthonous and imported cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis, with different Leishmania species being detected.

Summary: The study assessed the impact of an educational intervention on the basic knowledge about visceral leishmaniasis among PHC professionals in Rondonopolis, Brazil. The intervention increased professionals' awareness of the etiological agents, transmission routes, and clinical manifestations of VL. An improvement in knowledge regarding the roles of dogs in VL transmission and environmental management for prevention was also noted.
