The last two glacial cycles in central Patagonia: A precise record from the Nirehuao glacier lobe

Carly Peltier et al.

Summary: This study establishes a new and precise 10Be chronology of glacial maxima for the Nirehuao glacier lobe in the last two glacial cycles by developing a detailed geomorphic surficial map and targeting relatively tall, ridge-top boulders. The findings reveal the major traces of the MIS6 glacier advance, which occurred during the two coldest and dustiest periods of MIS6 in Antarctica, as well as the largest advance at the end of peak Southern Hemisphere MIS2 cooling. The occurrence of glacial maxima of the Nirehuao glacier lobe is correlated with the expansive winter sea ice around Antarctica and the minima of obliquity and eccentricity.

Limit of monsoonal precipitation in southern Tibet during the Last Glacial Maximum from relative moraine extents

Marie-Luce Chevalier et al.

Summary: Constraining the timing and extent of past glaciations is important to understand glacier responses to climate change. The study in Southern Tibet found that past glaciations were greatly influenced by spatial and temporal variations in precipitation, resulting in different extent of moraine deposits. The research also revealed variations in extent of Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and Marine Oxygen Isotope Stage (MIS)-3 moraines in different regions, attributed to spatial differences in precipitation patterns.

Climate reconstructions for the Last Glacial Maximum from a simple cirque glacier in Fiordland, New Zealand

Emily M. M. Moore et al.

Summary: Mountain glacier records provide important constraints on climate variability during the last glacial cycle. A new study in New Zealand reveals the role of climate in driving regional ice volume decline during marine isotope stages 3-2, with close spacing and good preservation of moraines from 19-17 ka supporting this finding. Onset of warming after 17.2 ka is consistent with evidence for a sustained southward shift in the southern westerly winds, promoting deglaciation.

Marine Oxygen Isotope Stage (MIS)-6 Glacial Advances on the Tibetan Plateau More Extensive than during MIS-2 due to More Abundant Precipitation

Marie-Luce Chevalier et al.

Summary: Numerous studies have been conducted on glacial deposits in the Himalayan-Tibetan orogen, but dating and interpreting older moraines, such as those from MIS-6, is challenging due to their less well-preserved nature and scattered age distribution. This study used Be-10 dating to determine that the most extensive surfaces of imbricated moraines near Yadong in southern Tibet were abandoned during MIS-6. A compilation of published data on MIS-6 moraines on the Tibetan Plateau reveals their widespread distribution in both dry and humid regions. The authors conclude that the extensive MIS-6 glacial advances were likely due to more abundant precipitation compared to MIS-2.

Timing and climatic drivers for the MIS 6 glaciation in the central Himalaya: 10Be surface exposure dating of hummocky moraine northwest of Mt. Gang Benchhen, Paiku Gangri

Guocheng Dong et al.

Summary: This study presents a Be-10 surface-exposure chronology to determine the timing of the MIS 6 glacial maximum in the central Himalaya. The results show that the outermost hummocky moraine formed around 165.7 ka, indicating the extent of glaciation during that period. The study also suggests a potential correlation between the MIS 6 glacial advance and Heinrich-like events, indicating the response of Himalayan glaciers to various forcings.

Abrupt changes in the global carbon cycle during the last glacial period

Thomas K. Bauska et al.

Summary: Research shows that during the last glacial period, atmospheric CO2 closely correlated with Antarctic temperature on millennial and centennial scales. While Southern Hemisphere processes played a major role in CO2 variability during the last glacial period, Northern Hemisphere processes were crucial drivers of centennial-scale variability.Southern processes largely defined Antarctic climate during the last glacial period, but Northern Hemisphere events strongly impacted short, centennial-scale changes.

The Zealandia Switch: Ice age climate shifts viewed from Southern Hemisphere moraines

George H. Denton et al.

Summary: The study addresses two fundamental questions about the ice-age climate system from a Southern Hemisphere perspective, with a focus on the last glacial termination and its climate elements. By studying mountain glaciers in the Southern Alps and southern Andes, researchers revealed possible causes and characteristics of the last glacial termination. The findings suggest a global warming episode during the last ice age, with a hypothesis involving a shift in Southern Ocean circulation and austral westerly wind system.
