A major orbito-hyetal event at the middle-to-late Oxfordian transition (Late Jurassic)

Leonidas Brikiatis

Summary: This article discusses the arido-eustasy model, which explains paleoenvironmental change by linking the carbon isotope record and eustatic sea level to hydroclimatic intensity modulated by orbital forcing. It suggests that extreme hydroclimatic intensity events, called Orbito-Hyetal Events (OHEs), play a crucial role in major paleoenvironmental crises. The study provides evidence for a strong and short-term OHE at the end of the middle Oxfordian.

Quantifying seawater exchange rates in the Eocene Arctic Basin using osmium isotopes

A. J. Dickson et al.

Summary: During the early Paleogene, the closure of seaways that connected the Arctic Ocean to the global ocean resulted in severe hydrographic restriction. New osmium isotope data from organic-rich sediments in the central Arctic Ocean during the Early-Middle Eocene show that the isotopic composition of osmium in Arctic seawater began to differ from that of the global ocean after the Eocene Thermal Maximum 2 hyperthermal event, likely due to the gradual closure of seaways connecting the two oceans.

Calcite uranium-lead geochronology applied to hardground lithification and sequence boundary dating

Benjamin Brigaud et al.

Summary: This study explored the timing and duration of hardground lithification and crystallization of early cements by dating early calcite cements with U-Pb geochronology. The consistency between the age of the cements and the stratigraphic age of deposition indicates that early cementation occurred during diagenesis. The results suggest that calcite U-Pb geochronology is a promising method for dating third-order sequence boundaries and refining the Jurassic time scale.

What controls the duration and intensity of ocean anoxic events in the Paleozoic and the Mesozoic?

Tom Reershemius et al.

Summary: The sedimentological and geochemical expression of Mesozoic Ocean Anoxic Events (OAEs) in the geologic record is well-characterized, but Paleozoic OAE-type intervals are understudied. Comparing Paleozoic OAEs to Mesozoic OAEs, it is found that Paleozoic OAEs are longer in duration and more areally extensive. The role of ferruginous conditions and widespread anoxia in driving longer OAEs is proposed, and an increase in atmospheric oxygen concentrations through the Phanerozoic may have been a key factor controlling the expression of OAEs over time.

Osmium Isotopic Evidence for Eccentricity-Paced Increases in Continental Weathering During the Latest Hauterivian, Early Cretaceous

H. Matsumoto et al.

Summary: The study reconstructed marine Os isotopic records in carbonate rocks in central Italy during the Lower Cretaceous and found periodic oscillations in Os-187/Os-188 corresponding to the 405-kyr Earth's eccentricity cycle. The variations in Os isotopic ratios likely reflect cyclic changes in continental weathering driven by eccentricity-paced intensification of monsoonal activity at low latitudes, possibly amplified by increased input of radiogenic Os from Paleozoic shale and Precambrian crust at higher latitudes due to a latitudinal shift of the intertropical convergence zone.
