Implication of size fraction on benthic foraminiferal-based paleo-reconstructions: A case study from the Bay of Biscay (NE Atlantic)

Pauline Depuydt et al.

Summary: This study compares the impact of different size fractions on paleoenvironmental analyses and finds that size fraction has a significant effect on the interpretation of fossil foraminiferal composition and biodiversity. It is recommended to use the larger size fraction for thorough taxonomic determination and detailed analysis, and to analyze the smaller fraction separately after taxonomical identification and strategic sample selection.

Ice sheet decline and rising atmospheric CO2 control AMOC sensitivity to deglacial meltwater discharge

Yuchen Sun et al.

Summary: The last deglaciation was characterized by a sequence of abrupt climate events that are believed to be linked to rapid changes in Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC). Deglacial CO2 rise and ice sheet decline modulate the sensitivity of AMOC to meltwater fluxes.

Intermediate ocean circulation and cryosphere dynamics in the northeast Atlantic during Heinrich Stadials: benthic foraminiferal assemblage response

Pauline Depuydt et al.

Summary: The interaction between ocean circulation and ice-sheet dynamics is crucial in Quaternary climate. This study examines palaeoenvironmental changes during Heinrich Stadials (HSs) in the northeast Atlantic using benthic foraminiferal assemblage data at approximately 1000 m depth in the Bay of Biscay. The results highlight the sensitivity of foraminifera to continental (European Ice Sheet dynamics) and marine (AMOC) forcing factors during HSs. Overall, the intermediate circulation in the northeast Atlantic was sluggish during HSs, characterized by the coexistence of meso-oligotrophic and anoxia indicator species and low abundance of high-energy indicator species. HS1 stands out for its high abundance of high-organic flux indicator species, corresponding to the most significant ice-sheet retreat and meltwater release period. Additionally, foraminifera indicate a mid-HS2 reventilation event caused by regional glacier instabilities.

Heinrich summers

George H. Denton et al.

Summary: Climate oscillations of the last ice age in Greenland and Antarctic ice cores did not always vary in unison. Antarctic warming episodes during Heinrich events in the North Atlantic suggest a need for an alternative hypothesis to explain such anti-phasing. The bipolar seesaw mechanism may not fully account for the observed phasing differences.

The North Atlantic Glacial Eastern Boundary Current as a Key Driver for Ice-Sheet-AMOC Interactions and Climate Instability

Samuel Toucanne et al.

Summary: The study reveals the important role of the upper branch of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) in ocean circulation and climate change during the glacial period. Fluctuations in the Glacial Eastern Boundary Current (GEBC) during Dansgaard-Oeschger (D-O) interstadials correspond to variations in subpolar gyre strength and northern-sourced water production, impacting deep water formation and AMOC strength. Ice-sheet-AMOC interactions during the last glacial period and deglaciation are explored, revealing abrupt climate changes.

Heinrich Stadial aridity forced Mediterranean-wide glacier retreat in the last cold stage

Summary: The study found that glacier growth in the Mediterranean region during Heinrich Stadials was influenced by aridity and warm humid climates, leading to changes in glacier mass balance. Different climatic conditions have significant effects on glacier growth and landscape development.

Trends and centennial-scale variability of surface water temperatures in the North Atlantic during the Holocene

Marie-Alexandrine Sicre et al.

Summary: The study reveals that during the Holocene in the North Atlantic, sea surface temperature variations differed between north Iceland and the eastern flank of Reykjanes Ridge, with unstable SSTs in north Iceland and more stable temperatures on the eastern side. Changes in sea temperature in the North Atlantic during different stages of the Holocene were influenced by Arctic water incursions, circulation intensification, and temporary collapses of deep-water circulation.
