Statistical evaluation of DPPH, ABTS, FRAP, and Folin-Ciocalteu assays to assess the antioxidant capacity of lignins

Jessica Rumpf et al.

Summary: This research investigates four different assays to determine the antioxidant capacity of standard substances, organosolv lignins, and kraft lignins. The lowest variation was found in the ABTS assay, while the highest was found in the DPPH assay. The FRAP and FC assays show the best correlation and indicate a single electron transfer mechanism, while DPPH has a different reaction mechanism. Lignins from different sources possess different antioxidant capacities and can be used in various applications.

Analysis, occurrence, toxicity and environmental health risks of synthetic phenolic antioxidants: A review

Wanyi Wang et al.

Summary: The increasing use of synthetic phenolic antioxidants (SPAs) as food additives, with dibutyl hydroxytoluene being widely used, poses potential threats to animal and human health, as shown in animal experiments. These compounds are widely distributed in various environmental matrices and may have toxic effects at high doses. Future research should focus on studying the transformation products of SPAs.

Active PLA Packaging Films: Effect of Processing and the Addition of Natural Antimicrobials and Antioxidants on Physical Properties, Release Kinetics, and Compostability

Adrian Rojas et al.

Summary: The addition of active agents into PLA significantly affects its optical properties, polymer chain reordering, thermal properties, functionality, and compostability. The dispersion degree and crystallinity changes of AAs from specific processing techniques also impact the mechanical and barrier performance of PLA. Furthermore, the release kinetics of AAs from PLA can be modified by the different physical properties of the films resulting from specific processing techniques.

Brazilian varieties of acerola (Malpighia emarginata DC.) produced under tropical semi-arid conditions: Bioactive phenolic compounds, sugars, organic acids, and antioxidant capacity

Ianca Carneiro Ferreira et al.

Summary: Acerola fruit, known for its high nutraceutical value, was analyzed in seven Brazilian varieties to determine their chemical composition and antioxidant capacity. The main sugars in acerola were glucose and fructose, while cyanidin-3-rhamnoside was the dominant phenolic compound in the fruit. Varieties showed variations in ascorbic acid, malic acid, and other phenolic compounds, indicating a high genetic variability influencing the nutraceutical properties of acerola.
