Gold-Catalyzed One-Pot Cycloisomerization/Nucleophilic Addition/Rearrangement of Acenaphthylene Carbaldehyde Derivatives

Alexis Truchon et al.

Summary: A gold-catalyzed orthogonal tandem reaction using HFIP as a Lewis acid has been developed to access carbocyclic ketone on naphthalene substrates. The yield of cyclic ketones ranged from 15% to 91% using a variety of acenaphthylene carbaldehydes. The mechanism involved a cyclization process followed by an [Au]-HFIP interaction for the final rearrangement. The gram-scale transformation and post-functionalization bromination were successfully carried out.

Hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) as a Multifunctional Agent in Gold-Catalyzed Cycloisomerizations and Sequential Transformations

Nikolaos V. Tzouras et al.

Summary: Despite the usefulness of gold catalysis in organic synthesis, it often requires activators and/or additives to generate cationic forms of gold catalysts. In this study, hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) is found to be a simple tool for gold-catalyzed cycloisomerizations, eliminating the need for external activators. HFIP acts as both a solvent and an activator through dynamic activation of the Au-Cl bond via hydrogen bonding. This unique mode of catalysis enables efficient and scalable cyclization reactions without the use of complex ligand/catalyst designs or activators.

Synthesis of Diverse Pentasubstituted Pyrroles by a Gold(I)-Catalyzed Cascade Rearrangement-Cyclization of Tertiary Enamide

Wenzhong Li et al.

Summary: This article introduces an efficient Au(I)-catalyzed intramolecular cascade reaction, which utilizes propargyl Claisen rearrangement and 5-exo-dig cyclization to prepare a variety of pentasubstituted pyrrole derivatives with excellent yields and functional group tolerance. Scale-up experiments and chemical transformations of the products demonstrate the versatility of tertiary enamides in organic synthesis.

Room Temperature Allenation of Terminal Alkynes with Aldehydes

Junzhe Xiao et al.

Summary: The study developed a gold-catalyzed room temperature allenation of terminal alkynes with aldehydes, providing 1,3-disubstituted allenes with diverse functional groups, and demonstrated the practicality and synthetic potentials of this reaction. Mechanistic studies showed that the gold catalyst, the aldehyde effect, the fluoroalkyl hydroxyl solvent, and the structure of the amine are essential for this room temperature ATA reaction.

The Elusive Au(I)•••H-O Hydrogen Bond: Experimental Verification

Gyeongjin Park et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the hydrogen bonding interaction between a metallobasic gold(I) center and an OH functionality, demonstrating the authentic interaction between them. Moreover, experimental results suggest that increasing the acidity of the OH functionality may not necessarily enhance the stability of the Au(I)···H-O interaction.

α-Cationic Phosphines: from Curiosities to Powerful Ancillary Ligands

Christian J. Rugen et al.

Summary: Alpha-cationic phosphines are phosphine compounds with at least one positively charged cyclic substituent directly attached to the phosphorus atom, exhibiting significantly diminished donor properties. They can increase the electrophilicity at metal centers in certain catalytic cycles, leading to enhanced reactivity. Easy synthesis, stability, and a ligand acceleration effect make alpha-cationic phosphines useful tools for synthetic practitioners.

Ligand-enforced intimacy between a gold cation and a carbenium ion: impact on stability and reactivity

Elishua D. Litle et al.

Summary: Controlling the reactivity of transition metal complexes by positioning non-innocent functionalities around the catalytic pocket has led to significant advances in catalysis. The newly synthesized dicationic phosphine gold complexes display high activity, supporting the role of the carbenium unit as a non-innocent functionality to enhance the activity of the adjacent metal center.
