Iminoacylation of Alkenes via Photoredox N-Heterocyclic Carbene Catalysis

Yi-Xiong Dong et al.

Summary: The iminoacylation of alkenes was achieved through photoredox N heterocyclic carbene catalysis using alkene-tethered alpha-imino-oxy acids and acyl imidazoles. The reaction resulted in the formation of substituted 3,4-dihydro-2H-pyrroles with moderate to good yields and good to high diastereoselectivities in most cases. This reaction involves the 5-exo-trig radical cyclization of an alkene-tethered iminyl radical and subsequent coupling with a ketyl radical from acyl imidazole under NHC catalysis.

Stepwise on-demand functionalization of multihydrosilanes enabled by a hydrogen-atom-transfer photocatalyst based on eosin Y

Xuanzi Fan et al.

Summary: Organosilanes play vital roles in modern society, finding wide applications in various fields including functional materials, organic synthesis, drug discovery, and life sciences. However, their synthesis is a challenging task, especially for heteroleptic substituted silicon reagents. This study demonstrates the efficient and selective functionalization of multihydrosilanes using neutral eosin Y as a direct HAT photocatalyst, enabling the synthesis of fully substituted silicon compounds. Through this strategy, diverse functionalization of hydrosilanes and selective monofunctionalization of di- and trihydrosilanes can be achieved.

Merging N-Heterocyclic Carbene Organocatalysis with Hydrogen Atom Transfer Strategy

Qing-Zhu Li et al.

Summary: Radical N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) organocatalysis has made significant progress in recent years, allowing for various impressive transformations. However, prefunctionalized substrates with a redox functionality have always been required. Therefore, direct functionalization of aliphatic C-H bonds in simple substrates has remained a challenge. The recent successful application of the hydrogen transfer atom (HAT) strategy in radical NHC catalysis has changed this situation. This concept paper discusses the combination of NHC catalysis with a classical intramolecular 1,5-HAT process, and highlights the unprecedented application of intermolecular HAT in radical NHC catalysis as a novel catalysis model with great synthetic potential.

Radical NHC Catalysis

Kun Liu et al.

Summary: Radical/radical cross-coupling reactions are efficient and direct methods for constructing chemical bonds. The widespread application of persistent radical effect (PRE) has been limited by the fact that the known types of transient radicals far outnumber the known types of persistent radicals. Recent research has focused on developing efficient cross-coupling reactions between transient radicals, and transition-metal catalysis has been successfully used to prolong radical lifetimes, enabling their utilization in formal radical/radical cross-couplings.

Critical Assessment of the Reducing Ability of Breslow-type Derivatives and Implications for Carbene-Catalyzed Radical Reactions**

Ludivine Delfau et al.

Summary: This study reported the synthesis of acyl azolium salts from various types of carbenes and the generation of their corresponding radicals and enolates, revealing the role of additives in the redox behavior of these compounds and correcting misconceptions about radical transformations of aldehyde derivatives. The reducing ability of enolates derived from certain carbenes was found to be underestimated, and catalytic intermediates were shown to transfer electrons efficiently at room temperature. Enol derivatives of certain carbenes were identified as powerful reducing agents.
