Visible-Light-Enabled Allylic C-H Oxidation: Metal-free Photocatalytic Generation of Enones

Chao Liu et al.

Summary: A practical and efficient method for the direct oxidation of allylic C-H bonds has been established using visible-light-enabled photoredox agents. This metal-free protocol utilizes oxygen as the sole oxidant to produce functionalized enones at room temperature. When combined with acid-promoted dehydration, it enables the production of meta-functionalized phenols from simple cyclohexenols.

Identification of Alkoxy Radicals as Hydrogen Atom Transfer Agents in Ce-Catalyzed C-H Functionalization

Qing An et al.

Summary: The importance of alkoxy radicals in cerium-catalyzed C-H functionalization reactions has been confirmed and the involvement of chlorine radicals has been ruled out. The study also emphasizes the influence of the relative ratio of alcohol to cerium on the reaction selectivity. Furthermore, the selectivity of alkoxy radical generation and the regulatory role of back-electron transfer have been analyzed.

Oxidative lactonization of C(sp3)-H bond in methyl aromatic alcohols enabled by proton-coupled electron transfer

Shanyi Chen et al.

Summary: Direct functionalization of inert C(sp(3))-H bonds in pharmaceutically significant compounds is highly important in modern synthetic organic chemistry. In this article, a practical and efficient method for the oxidative lactonization of benzylic C(sp(3))-H bonds is disclosed, enabled by the synergistic interactions of organic dye-type rose bengal, n-Bu4N center dot Br, O-2, and Na2HPO4 under visible light irradiation. This reaction does not require transition metal catalysts or strong oxidants and has shown excellent selectivity and high functional group compatibility in synthesizing structurally diverse phthalides. The late-stage application of this reaction further demonstrates its synthetic utility in preparing structurally complex phthalides.

Visible-Light-Induced Homolysis of Earth-Abundant Metal-Substrate Complexes: A Complementary Activation Strategy in Photoredox Catalysis

Youssef Abderrazak et al.

Summary: The mainstream applications of visible-light photoredox catalysis mainly involve precious metal Ru-II or Ir-III complexes or organic dyes with low photostability. Earth-abundant metal-based (MLn)-L-n-type complexes are evolving rapidly as alternative photocatalysts that offer economic and ecological advantages and access to complementary inner-sphere mechanistic modes, transcending the inherent limitations of ultrashort excited-state lifetimes. The process of visible-light-induced homolysis (VLIH) involves the formation of light-absorbing ligated metal-substrate complexes that undergo homolytic cleavage for further transformations.

Copper Catalyzed C(sp3)- H Bond Alkylation via Photoinduced Ligand-to-Metal Charge Transfer

Sean M. Treacy et al.

Summary: By utilizing catalytic CuCl2, various feedstock chemicals can be functionalized through the coupling of unactivated C(sp(3))-H bonds with electron-deficient olefins. This reaction, enabled by Ligand-to-Metal Charge Transfer (LMCT), generates a chlorine radical capable of abstracting strong electron-rich C(sp(3))-H bonds. The protocol offers a simple operation and atom economical approach to generate a highly active hydrogen atom transfer reagent.

Iron-Catalyzed Photoinduced LMCT: A 1° C-H Abstraction Enables Skeletal Rearrangements and C(sp3)-H Alkylation

Yi Cheng Kang et al.

Summary: In this study, an iron-catalyzed method was developed for skeletal rearrangement reactions from unactivated C(sp(3))-H bonds to access alkylated products. By utilizing photoinduced ligand-to-metal charge transfer, a chlorine radical is generated at the iron center to abstract electron-rich C(sp(3))-H bonds, leading to the formation and rearrangement of alkyl radicals for the synthesis of alkylated products. Simple adjustments to the reaction conditions enable the selective synthesis of directly alkylated or rearranged-alkylated products.
