Tropylium Ion, an Intriguing Moiety in Organic Chemistry

Fatima Tuz Zahra et al.

Summary: The tropylium ion is a versatile non-benzenoid aromatic species that serves as a catalyst in numerous organic transformations. It outperforms transition-metal catalysts with its yield, moderate conditions, non-toxic byproducts, functional group tolerance, selectivity, and ease of handling. This review highlights the importance of the tropylium ion as an environmentally safe catalyst and summarizes its role in various organic reactions.

it-Stacked Ion Pairs: Tightly Associated Charged Porphyrins in Ordered Arrangement Enabling Radical-Pair Formation

Hiroki Tanaka et al.

Summary: Charged porphyrins can form solid-state assemblies and solution-state stacked ion pairs based on peripheral electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups. Concentration-dependent 1H NMR signal shifts and electron spin resonance analysis revealed antiferromagnetic dipolar interactions and temperature-dependent spin transfer behavior in this process.

Ruthenium-Locked Helical Chirality: A Barrier of Inversion and Formation of an Asymmetric Macrocycle

Corjan van de Griend et al.

Summary: This study investigates the coordination of tetradentate ligands to metal centers and the resulting formation of helical chiral complexes. The inversion barrier of these complexes is studied using variable-temperature H-1 NMR. Additionally, a serendipitous ring-closing reaction is discovered, resulting in the formation of a chiral complex. This unexpected transformation appears to be specific to ruthenium(II) as macrocyclization did not occur with other metals.

Ion-pairing π-electronic systems: ordered arrangement and noncovalent interactions of negatively charged porphyrins

Yoshifumi Sasano et al.

Summary: Charged pi-electronic species were observed to develop stacking structures based on electrostatic and dispersion forces, with the concept of (i)pi-(i)pi Interaction introduced to describe the interactions in these structures. The energy decomposition analysis revealed the importance of electrostatic and dispersion forces in stabilizing the stacking of pi-electronic ions, as observed through crystal-state absorption spectra and transient absorption spectroscopy.

Rollover Cyclometalation vs Nitrogen Coordination in Tetrapyridyl Anticancer Gold(III) Complexes: Effect on Protein Interaction and Toxicity

Xue-Quan Zhou et al.

Summary: Two gold(III) complexes with similar molecular shapes and monocationic charges were prepared in this work, allowing comparison of their chemistry, protein interaction, and anticancer properties. Despite their similarities, the complexes exhibited differences in reactivity towards biological thiols and cytotoxicity towards cancer cells, highlighting the potential of bis-cyclometalation for developing novel gold-based cytotoxic compounds.
