One Pot Synthesis of 1,2-Disubstituted Ethanones by Base-Mediated Reductive Homocoupling of Aldehydes

Guohui Zhang et al.

Summary: Reductive homocoupling transformations mediated by bases and TMSCN have been utilized for the synthesis of 1,2-disubstituted ethanones. This protocol offers a method for the synthesis of functionalized ethanones from aldehydes without the need for transition metals, all in a single reaction vessel.

Molybdenum-Catalyzed Intermolecular Deoxygenative Cross-Coupling Reactions of 1,2-Diketones with a-Ketoamides

Yuan-Qing Dong et al.

Summary: We describe a molybdenum-catalyzed intermolecular deoxygenative cross coupling method, in which three out of four carbonyl oxygen atoms in stable and readily accessible 1,2-diketones are eliminated, and a carbon-nitrogen bond and a carbon-carbon double bond are formed in a one-step reaction. Various pyrrol-2-ones can be synthesized with up to 96% yield using a commercial molybdenum catalyst. The potential of this method is demonstrated through synthetic transformations, gram-scale synthesis, and derivatization of natural products and drug molecules. Preliminary mechanistic investigation suggests that this cascade process may be initiated by a formal intermolecular N-H insertion reaction followed by an intramolecular carbonyl-carbonyl olefination reaction, both catalyzed by a single molybdenum catalyst.

Tandem Synthesis of 1,3-Disubstituted Naphthalenes via TfOH-Promoted Directed-Aldol and Friedel-Crafts Reactions

Hongchen Li et al.

Summary: A novel tandem synthesis of 1,3-disubstituted naphthalenes is developed using TfOH-promoted directed-aldol and Friedel-Crafts reactions. The discovery of a chemoselective directed-aldol reaction between different ketones with alpha-hydrogens enables the efficient creation of new C-C bonds and a benzene ring in one pot.

Molybdenum-Catalyzed Deoxygenative Cyclopropanation of 1,2-Dicarbonyl or Monocarbonyl Compounds

Li-Ya Cao et al.

Summary: The study describes a Mo-catalyzed regiospecific deoxygenative cyclopropanation reaction using readily available 1,2-dicarbonyl compounds, which efficiently produces substituted cyclopropanes with high selectivity and synthetic utility. Preliminary mechanistic studies suggest that phosphine (or silane) acts as both a mild reductant and a good oxygen acceptor, efficiently regenerating the catalytically active Mo catalyst.
