Optimizing carrier balance of a red quantum-dot light-emitting electrochemical cell with a carrier injection layer of cationic Ir(III) complex

Summary: Solid-state light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) are showing great potential in display and lighting applications due to their solution processability, low-voltage operation, and compatibility with inert cathode metals. Ionic transition metal complexes (iTMCs) have relatively higher electroluminescence (EL) efficiencies, but the red iTMCs have moderate color saturation and low emission efficiency. To improve this, efficient quantum dots (QDs) with narrow emission bandwidth are used in red QD LECs with iTMC carrier injection layers for in situ electrochemical doping. This structure shows superior carrier balance, high external quantum efficiency, and current efficiency. Comparatively, QD LECs have less device efficiency roll-off at higher currents, making them promising candidates for saturated light sources in displays.
