Ultra-compact dual-mode mode-size converter for silicon photonic few-mode fiber interfaces

Summary: Experimental results show that the challenge of large mode-size mismatch between waveguides and fibers can be overcome with an ultra-compact mode-size converter. The device efficiently expands TE0 and TE1 waveguide modes on a silicon-on-insulator platform with low insertion losses, enabling the generation of higher-order modes on-chip in combination with diffraction grating couplers.
