Goos-Hanchen and Imbert-Fedorov shifts of the Airy beam in dirac metamaterials

Qinxin Yue et al.

Summary: We derive the theoretical expression for the Goos-Hanchen (GH) and Imbert-Fedorov (IF) shifts of the Airy beam in Dirac metamaterial. Large GH and IF shifts are observed near the Dirac and Brewster angles. The GH shifts of the Airy beam are more prominent near the Brewster angle compared to Gaussian beams. Interestingly, an Airy vortex beam can be generated at the Dirac point. The magnitude and direction of the GH shifts can be controlled by the rotation angles of the Airy beam. We propose a reflective optical switch based on the rotation angle-controlled GH shifts of the Dirac metamaterial. Our findings provide the possibility for light-tuned optical switches and can be applied to describe GH and IF shifts in other similar photonic systems.

A Janus Logic Gate with Sensing Function

Junyang Sui et al.

Summary: A layered metastructure consisting of graphene and isotropic dielectric mediums is studied theoretically, which can achieve the functions of tunable logic gate and refractive index sensing based on spin Hall effect. The asymmetric arrangement of the mediums and the increased angle of the incident electromagnetic waves give the metastructure Janus feature. By adjusting the chemical potential of graphene, a sharp absorption peak in the terahertz range can be obtained, corresponding to the forward and backward scales of NOT logic and OR logic, respectively. By locating the incident angle of light corresponding to the SHE displacement peak, a linear measurement relationship between refractive index and SHE angle can be realized with a wide measurement range of 1-1.4 and optimum sensitivity up to 153.5 degrees RIU-1. The refractive index sensing still strictly follows the logic functions of forward NOT and backward OR by adjusting the chemical potential of graphene and discerning the peak value of SHE displacement.

Junyang Sui et al.

Summary: In this paper, a Janus metastructure sensor (JMS) based on the photonic spin Hall effect (PSHE) is proposed, which can detect multiple physical quantities. The JMS has different detection performances due to the asymmetric arrangement of different dielectrics. The forward and backward incident electromagnetic waves (EWs) can be used to detect refractive index, thickness, and incidence angle with different sensitivities and detection ranges.

Magneto-optical spin Hall effect of light in topological insulators

Xiang Zhou et al.

Summary: The study investigates the tunable spin Hall effect of light on the surface of topological insulators under the influence of an external magnetic field, revealing that the shift of the effect is determined by the dissipative and reactive components of the insulators' optical conductivity. The shifts are insensitive to the magnetic field and Fermi energy at high frequencies but sensitive to them at low frequencies, with potential applications in determining these properties using the SHEL shifts.

Highly sensitive refractive index sensor based on the lossy mode resonance enhanced photonic spin Hall effect

Huixin Wang et al.

Summary: This article introduces a method called lossy mode resonance (LMR), which is different from surface plasmon resonance (SPR). LMR can be excited by both p- and s-polarized light, enabling the enhancement of the transverse spin-dependent shift (SDS) of the photonic spin Hall effect (PSHE). The maximum transverse SDSs for the horizontal and vertical polarization states are achieved using LMR, with values of 13.28 μm and 7.64 μm respectively, which are approximately 12 and 7 times the incident light wavelength. The researchers also propose an LMR-enhanced PSHE-based refractive index sensor, which achieves a maximum refractive index sensitivity of 13500 μm/RIU (RIU, refractive index unit).

Barcode encryption based on negative and positive Goos-Hanchen shifts in a graphene-ITO/TiO2/ITO sandwich structure

Yiping Ding et al.

Summary: This study proposes a graphene-ITO/TiO2/ITO sandwich structure and investigates the Goos-Hanchen shift. The findings reveal that the sign of GH shifts remains positive or negative in different wavelength ranges when graphene conductivity is zero; when graphene conductivity is non-zero, the sign of GH shifts is influenced by adjusting the Fermi energy. By utilizing these variations, a barcode encryption scheme is designed based on the sign of GH shifts, allowing for easy encoding and decoding by adjusting the incident wavelength and Fermi energy.
