Breaking the limitation of polarization multiplexing in optical metasurfaces with engineered noise

Bo Xiong et al.

Summary: By introducing engineered noise to the precise solution of Jones matrix elements, we have surpassed the fundamental limit of polarization multiplexing capacity of metasurfaces. Through experiments, we have achieved up to 11 independent holographic images using a single metasurface illuminated by visible light with different polarizations, which is the highest reported capacity for polarization multiplexing. With the combination of position multiplexing, the metasurface is capable of generating 36 distinct images, forming a holographic keyboard pattern. This discovery opens up new possibilities for high-capacity optical display, information encryption, and data storage.

Optically and radiofrequency-transparent metadevices based on quasi-one-dimensional surface plasmon polariton structures

Hao-Ran Zu et al.

Summary: Transparent metadevices based on quasi-one-dimensional surface plasmon polariton structures offer optical and radiofrequency transparency. They can be used to create arbitrarily shaped waveguides for transmission applications and converters for radiation applications. We demonstrate the potential of this technology by constructing a wireless communication scheme for image transfer using microwave metadevices.

Realization of broadband coherent perfect absorption of spoof surface plasmon polaritons

Cong Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, we propose and demonstrate a scheme to achieve broadband coherent perfect absorption of spoof surface plasmon polaritons using an ultrathin conductive film. By adjusting the sheet resistance of the conductive film and the phase difference between the incident beams, absorption can be achieved over a wide spectrum.

An Optically Transparent Metantenna for RF Wireless Energy Harvesting

Pei Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel transparent metantenna design based on indium tin oxide (ITO) material, which achieves wireless energy harvesting and efficient transmission of visible light. With improved metasurface structure, the metantenna demonstrates high transparency and broadband low profile characteristics, while maintaining good electrical performance. By designing broadband rectifying circuit and energy management circuit, stable DC output and high RF energy harvesting efficiency are achieved. The combination with solar panels enables efficient RF/solar hybrid energy harvesting.

Through-Wall Wireless Communication Enabled by a Metalens

Xiangdong Meng et al.

Summary: This study proposes a scheme of through-wall wireless communication using purposely designed passive metalenses. The metalenses can efficiently focus incoming waves to the other side of the wall, significantly enhancing wireless signal strength. By demonstrating its application in the 5GHz Wi-Fi environment, the study shows that the metalenses can reconnect broken network channels due to weak signal strength and significantly increase data transmission rates. This research provides an effective solution for wireless communication in future eco-friendly buildings.

Synthetic helical dichroism for six-dimensional optical orbital angular momentum multiplexing

Xu Ouyang et al.

Summary: Optical multiplexing with orthogonal data channels improves density and security, but nanoscale OAM sensitivity limits its application. Utilizing OAM for nanoscale information multiplexing involves discovering OAM-dependent polarization ellipses and synthetic helical dichroism. This mechanism enables six-dimensional optical information multiplexing with subwavelength-scale focused OAM beams and plasmonic nanoaggregates.
