Experimental Demonstration of Wavelength-tunable In-Series DFB Laser Array with 100-GHz Spacing

Zhenxing Sun et al.

Summary: In this research, a four-channel wavelength-tunable in-series DFB laser array with linearly chirped Bragg gratings and reflector sections is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The design reduces extra power loss and enables low threshold current operation, while maintaining stable single-mode operation with high output power and uniform channel spacing.

A Review of Photonic Systems-on-Chip Enabled by Widely Tunable Lasers

Larry A. Coldren et al.

Summary: Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs) on indium phosphide have seen significant developments in the past decades, providing important functionalities in various system applications. The advantages of these PICs include the reduction in size, weight, and power consumption, as well as improved phase stability and reduced coupling losses among optical paths. In this paper, as part of a tribute to Prof. Daniel Dapkus, the focus is on monolithic PICs that incorporate and build on widely-tunable laser technology as a key element. The paper reviews early widely-tunable laser work, presents past system-on-a-chip developments as background, and provides a detailed review of recent system-on-a-chip advances by the author's groups, highlighting key advances.

16-channel tunable and 25-Gb/s EAM-integrated DBR-LD for WDM-based mobile front-haul networks

Oh Kee Kwon et al.

Summary: A tunable distributed Bragg reflector-laser diode (DBR-LD) integrated with an electro-absorption-modulator (EAM) at 1.3 µm wavelength was successfully demonstrated. The device showed good performance with wavelength tuning achieved through voltage adjustment and current injection, making it suitable for use in WDM-based mobile front-haul networks.

1.3 μm InGaAlAs/InP laser integrated with laterally tapered SSC in a reverse mesa shape

Xiaobo La et al.

Summary: The study introduces 1.3 μm InGaAlAs/InP lasers integrated with a laterally tapered spot size converter (SSC) in a reverse mesa shape. The fabricated device exhibits low lateral and vertical divergence angles of 8 degrees and 11 degrees, respectively. High quality SSCs with narrow tip width can be achieved through conventional photolithography with a high reproducibility.
