Spatiotemporal observation of higher-order modulation instability in a recirculating fiber loop

Francois Copie et al.

Summary: In this study, we experimentally investigate higher-order seeded modulation instability in an optical fiber experiment. By using a recirculating loop configuration with round trip losses compensation, we are able to observe, in a single-shot, the spatiotemporal evolution of an initially modulated continuous field, revealing intricate yet deterministic dynamics. We observe a continuous transition between perfectly coherent and purely noise-driven dynamics by tuning the modulation period, which we characterize by means of a statistical study.

Intense Wave Formation from Multiple Soliton Fusion and the Role of Extra Dimensions

Feifei Xin et al.

Summary: In this study, the role of dimensionality in multiple soliton fusion is experimentally and numerically investigated. It is found that three solitons can fuse into an intense wave when an extra dimension without broken inversion symmetry is involved.

Evidence of Chaotic Dynamics in Three-Soliton Collisions

Feifei Xin et al.

Summary: Chaotic optical wave dynamics characterized by erratic energy transfer and soliton annihilation and creation are observed in the aftermath of a three-soliton collision in a photorefractive crystal. These irregular dynamics are found to be mediated by the nonlinear Raman effect, a coherent interaction leading to nonreciprocal soliton energy exchange. The results extend the analogy between solitons and particles and provide new insight into the origin of the irregular dynamics accompanying extreme and rogue waves.
