Design of multiple-frequency-band terahertz metamaterial absorbers with adjustable absorption peaks using toothed resonator

Ben-Xin Wang et al.

Summary: This paper presents a multiple-frequency-band terahertz metamaterial absorber using the surface structure of a toothed resonator. It is capable of controlling the number of absorption peaks without increasing design complexity, unlike previous works. Moreover, the introduction of temperature-controlled vanadium dioxide allows for dynamic tuning of its resonance performance.

Flexible terahertz metamaterial filter with high transmission intensity and large tuning range for optical communication application

Longqin Wu et al.

Summary: In this study, a flexible terahertz metamaterial (FTM) filter is presented, which is composed of cross-shaped metamaterial configurations on a polydimethylsiloxanes (PDMS) substrate. The FTM filters provide a controllable transmission carrier for a broad frequency range in the subTHz window and show high transmission intensity. This design will play a key role in the future indoor wireless communication with miniaturization, large tuning range, and high transmission intensity characteristics.

Xiaocan Xu et al.

Summary: A voltage-controllable device is proposed in this study for CO2 gas sensing application, integrating a VO2-based metamaterial perfect absorber (MPA) and a MEMS microheater. By driving the microheater, the MPA can be heated and exhibit switchable optical properties. This research provides a new approach for sensors, absorbers, switches, and programmable devices in the infrared wavelength range.

Polarization-controlled varifocal metalens with a phase change material GSST in mid-infrared

Jinren Tan et al.

Summary: This paper introduces the application of dynamic metasurfaces based on phase-change materials (PCMs) in the detection of aldehyde carbonyl radiation. Two reflected varifocal metasurfaces are proposed by combining materials with similar optical constants. These metasurfaces demonstrate good performance in improving signal-to-noise ratio, reducing energy loss, and crosstalk.

Reconfigurable all-dielectric metalens with diffraction-limited performance

Mikhail Y. Shalaginov et al.

Summary: This study introduces an active metasurface platform with all-dielectric, low-loss architecture for phase tuning in the full 2 range and diffraction-limited performance. A new design principle enables binary switching between arbitrary phase profiles for metasurfaces, along with a figure-of-merit tailored for reconfigurable meta-optics. The high-performance varifocal metalens with a record large switching contrast ratio and aberration-free, multi-depth imaging represents a key experimental demonstration of non-mechanical tunable metalens with diffraction-limited performance.

Stretchable metalens with tunable focal length and achromatic characteristics

Peng Lin et al.

Summary: The stretchable metalens proposed in this study can achieve highly tunable focal length and achromatic characteristics by stretching along x and y-axis directions. The focal length remains stable and shows a linear relationship with the change in the period of the metalens. By stretching the period of the metalens, the focal lengths can be tuned in a linear range for incident wavelengths ranging from 480 nm to 660 nm, with a tuning range of over 200% for these wavelengths.

Electrically Actuated Varifocal Lens Based on Liquid-Crystal-Embedded Dielectric Metasurfaces

Melissa Bosch et al.

Summary: An ultrathin electrically controlled varifocal lens based on liquid crystal encapsulated dielectric metasurfaces is capable of continuous zoom and up to 20% total focal shift. The concept of LC-based metalens is experimentally verified through the design and fabrication of a bifocal metalens, allowing high-contrast switching between two discrete focal lengths upon application of a voltage bias. Due to their ultrathin thickness and adaptable design, LC-driven dielectric metasurfaces offer new opportunities for compact varifocal lensing in a variety of modern imaging applications.
