Study of the Microstructure, Mechanical Properties, Residual Stresses, and Distortion in Type 316LN Stainless Steel Medium Thickness Plate Weld Joints

M. Ragavendran et al.

Summary: This study compared the weld joints of 316LN stainless steel plates made using different welding processes. The results showed that the autogenous Activated-TIG (ATIG) welding process produced weld joints with narrower weld beads, lower ferrite content, higher impact toughness, and less distortion compared to the multi-pass Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding process. Therefore, autogenous ATIG welding is recommended for welding medium thickness plates of 316LN stainless steel.

Influence of Si content on the microstructure and mechanical properties of silicon stainless steel

Prince Setia et al.

Summary: The study investigated the influence of Si addition on the microstructure and mechanical behavior of cast silicon stainless steel alloys, revealing significant changes in microstructure and mechanical properties with varying Si content. Si incorporation improved strength and ductility in primarily austenitic microstructure, but higher Si content led to a duplex structure and reduced ductility. Nanoindentation characterization suggested significant improvements in hardness and modulus of the austenite phase after Si incorporation. Further analysis indicated a correlation between mechanical properties and crystallographic orientation of grains, showing highly anisotropic behavior. Lastly, nanomechanical properties were used to predict bulk mechanical properties with ECM model, highlighting the need for refined models for materials with duplex microstructure.

Evaluation of tensile properties using uni-axial and ball indentation testing and correlation with microstructure variations across the 316LN stainless steel weld joints

M. Ragavendran et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the tensile properties of 316LN stainless steel weld joints in different regions using ABI tests and uniaxial tensile tests. It finds that microstructure variations, such as grain size and 8-ferrite content, are the primary cause of tensile strength variation across the weld joints. Higher temperatures lead to material softening and lower tensile strength gradients. Hybrid laser MIG welding is recommended for better tensile properties in 316LN stainless steel components.

Strengthening mechanisms in selective laser melted 316L stainless steel

Siqi Chen et al.

Summary: The microstructure and chemical composition of 316L stainless steel prepared by selective laser melting were characterized. The study showed the presence of a multi-scale microstructure with equiaxed and columnar grains, dislocation cell blocks, individual dislocations, and nanosized particles. The misorientations across dislocation cells were determined, and the distribution of alloying elements and nitrogen content was also observed. The study found that dislocation strengthening and solid solution strengthening were the main contributing factors to the yield strength of the material.

On the role of molybdenum on the microstructural, mechanical and corrosion properties of the GTAW AISI 316 stainless steel welds

Farhad Ostovan et al.

Summary: A comparative study was conducted on GTAW AISI 316 welds fabricated using three different filler metals, with varying Molybdenum concentrations. The higher Mo concentration led to changes in the microstructure, mechanical properties, and corrosion behavior of the welds, resulting in improved hardness, strength, and corrosion resistance. The presence of Mo-rich carbides and formation of a passive film were noted in welds with higher Mo content, contributing to the enhanced properties.

A comparison of laser-metal inert gas hybrid welding and metal inert gas welding of high-nitrogen austenitic stainless steel

Jie Ning et al.

Summary: High-nitrogen austenitic stainless steel offers superior properties, but welding may lead to nitrogen-related issues. By comparing welded joints, it was found that laser-MIG hybrid welding exhibited higher tensile strength and impact absorption energy due to solid solution strengthening and improved microstructure.
