Correlation between mechanical, gamma shielding features and tellurium oxide concentrations in molybdenum aluminum strontium borate glass

Mohammad A. Imheidat et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of replacing B2O3 with TeO2 in a glass system containing a fixed amount of Al2O3, MoO3, and SrO. The impact of adding TeO2 on radiation and mechanical properties was theoretically analyzed. The addition of TeO2 gradually reduced the packing density and the Young's longitudinal, shear, and bulk moduli. However, the density and shielding properties, such as mass attenuation coefficient, transmission factor, effective atomic number, radiation protection efficiency, charged particle range, etc., enhanced progressively with increasing TeO2 instead of B2O3. It can be concluded that adding TeO2 reduced the glass elasticity and enhanced radiation shielding features, suggesting potential applications in the gamma and charged particle shielding scope.

Impact of CdO on optical, structural, elastic, and radiation shielding parameters of CdO-PbO-ZnO-B2O3-SiO2 glasses

Mohammed Ezzeldin et al.

Summary: CdO-PbO-B2O3-SiO2-ZnO glasses with different compositions were prepared and their structural, optical, elastic, and radiation shielding properties were investigated. The addition of CdO resulted in slight changes in the internal structural units and significant changes in the optical, elastic, and radiation shielding properties of the glasses. These changes were attributed to the replacement of PbO by CdO, and it was found that the glass samples exhibited better radiation shielding ability than standard materials.

Gamma-ray-induced changes in the radiation shielding, structural, mechanical, and optical properties of borate, tellurite, and borotellurite glass systems modified with barium and bismuth oxide

Awatif Alshamari et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of different gamma-ray doses and TeO2 ratios on the properties of borate glass modified with barium and bismuth oxide. The study shows that color changes occur in all glass samples under gamma-ray irradiation, with increasing doses causing darker colors. The glass structure remains stable with different doses, but there is a variation in intensity. Borate glass exhibits the highest mechanical properties and thermal stability, while the highest mass attenuation coefficient (MAC) is observed in borate glass samples against gamma doses. This suggests that borate glass has potential for use in radiation-shielding applications.

Impact of lead oxide on the structure, optical, and radiation shielding properties of potassium borate glass doped with samarium ions

M. I. Sayyed et al.

Summary: In this study, glasses with different PbO contents were prepared to combine the radiation shielding ability and high transparency. The results showed that the average density of the glasses increased with PbO additions, while the transparency slightly decreased. The radiation shielding parameters of these glasses were much higher than common materials, indicating their potential application in the field of radiation shielding.

M. I. Sayyed et al.

Summary: The role of La2O3 in the photon shielding effectiveness of La2O3-B2O3 glass systems for the low energy range has been explored. The insertion of La2O3 enhances the mass attenuation coefficient and the linear attenuation coefficient, making it possible to develop new radiation shielding glasses. Furthermore, the mechanical moduli decrease with increasing content of La2O3.

High density of tungsten gadolinium borate glasses for radiation shielding material: Effect of WO3 concentration

W. Cheewasukhanont et al.

Summary: The aim of this work was to study the radiation shielding properties of different compositions of xWO(3):(70-x)Gd2O3:30B(2)O(3) (WGB) glasses. By comparing experimental results with theoretical predictions using the Compton scattering technique and simulation methods, the good performance of the detection system was confirmed. It was found that the density decreased and the MAC, Z(eff), and N-eff increased with increasing WO3 content, while they decreased with increasing energies. At a concentration of 40 mol%, the glass exhibited better shielding efficiency.
